If your son is in education,

http://software4students.co.uk/

If your workplace subscribes to HUP,

http://www.microsofthup.com/hupuk/home.aspx?culture=en-GB

Failing that,

Work for a charity? Sign up to CTX exchange. I had to do a double take on the prices for us at work for OS and Office.

Having had to go back to office due to work reasons 365 isn't that bad really. It falls down here as the business subscription is hosted by the crap phone provider. In use it's been mostly OK and being able to use it on several computers is great. The 1 user licenses are locked to the PC so if you need to reinstall you need to pay again - not a fan of that idea.

After that the real question is do you actually need it?
Libre/open office does most if not all of what 90% of users need.
Google Docs is exceptional as an online platform
Simply export docs to pdf if you are worried about any formatting stuff.
Now mac seems to be pedalling it's words and numbers thing the 1 proprietary suite to rule them all is probably not going to hold.
