Good stuff DezB.
However... I could never be nailed down to a best ever on anything so I'll offer a best of now which is probably the soundtrack to Blue Valentine (Grizzly Bear largely). I love Badalamenti and Morricone and even have a soft spot for Vangelis' Blade Runner although in isolation that music is cheese. Grease anyone?
I do think Star Wars is particularily brilliant... it's a fine piece of work as a standalone but it's so integrated into the films. Sunset over the desert... And not just proper star wars, those new ones have a fine score too.
As far as soundtracks, no love for Garden State? You could say it's just a mix tape but it's not pasted on at all, it's all perfectly matched to the films and I think is one of the reasons I love it so much, the music just always feels so right.
I think these 2 stand out because they're so integral to the films themselves- star wars in particular just wouldn't be a fraction as good without the score, it sets the tone all the way through, helps carry the action or the emotion, and god knows half the actors couldn't manage that.
The Good The Bad and the Ugly has another superb score- Ecstasy of Gold puts shivers up my spine still. But, I never really felt it's as essential.

As a theme tune, who can argue that this is right up there with the best?
Okay, to follow on I'd add that in keeping with the less is more - 'The Fighter' has a great score. It borders on 'Rocky' cheesyness at times and quotes the era in the same way that 'The Wrestler' did, but the incidental (as it it used to be called) music is great. Really. Violined in guitar notes - old school ambience.
Anything slightly above the non diagetic is good in my appreciation.
But then I do love the slam of a well chosen song too.
Give the Sunshine score a listen. I think it's amazing, and it was used on Top Gear quite a lot. John Murphy reworked quite a lot if it onto KickAss.
I like the Philip Glass shout. I discovered him while playing GTA 4, and have been hooked ever since. Never seen the films to go with the music though. Unless Watchmen counts?

Get hold of a copy of Koyaanisqatsi. Get some of yer fave booze in, and maybe something whose use I cannot possibly condone on a Family Forum what is commonly mixed with tobacco and smoked. Stick yer sound through yer stereo. Get comfy. Enjoy.
Best watched on yer own, or with someone who will also appreciate an audiovisual treat.

Phenomenal arrangements of already classic songs, and I don't think any of them detract from the originals' brilliance.
Star Wars is the only film score that actually gives me goose bumps - the way the intro comes in alone.
And I also like the fight scene music in episode 1 (the forth film) - the Darth Maul bit.

to completely miss the point and nominate a tv programme, Angelo Badalamenti's score for Twin Peaks has been in the pile of cds by my bed for years - tucked up with a book and that on in the background's about the best way to drift off of an evening (with an Obvious as an optional extra o' course)

The originally composed music is pretty awesome too. Very powerful analogue synth sounds.
