Nick, are you into 60's music? I have a gem I could yousendit to you. It's primarily good, happens to be obscure!
A bit Kate Bushy. It's the only thing that's touched me in that xmas prezzie kinda way
The Late Greats - Turpentine
I like Heaven is Wherever more than Stay Positive, I think, but I still prefer The Hold Steady's first three albums, especially Separation Sunday.
I was disappointed by The Courage of Others and Revolver Soul is growing on me only slowly. Where Oracular Spectacular had a few pop gems on it, Congratulations didn't have much that stuck in my head (except that one about Brian Eno, a bit). The latest Gorillaz album is fairly good but can't hold a candle to Demon Days.
I think I've bought a reasonable number of new albums this year but so far nothing seems to have really grabbed me. No doubt some will grow on me but none have had an immediate impact.
Just to be clear I've no interest in folk trying to out "obscure" each other
Me neither, but it bugs me that people think we are!
Anyone know of any good punk/hardcore stuff thats been released recently?
Alot of the albums mentioned so far i reckon have been good like four tet, flying lotus, pantha du prince etc. but none of it has 'blown me away'
I think theres a newish dirty projector album that will probably be quite good.
Omar RL and John Frusciante released some old stuff a couple of months back (for free) that was quite good.
+2 for Bonnie "Prince" Billy and The Cairo Gang - Wonder Show of the World
Dirty Projectors and Bjork - Mount Wittenberg Orca
Broken Social Scene - Forgiveness Rock Record
Porcupine Tree - The Incident
The Mars Volta - Octahedron
Pain Of Salvation - Road Salt
2nd fav-show of hands-arrogance ignorance and greed*
*kinda NuFolk, so maybe too obscure to those unwilling to give anything slightly different a listen
for me these albums I can't stop listening to;
Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma.
65daysofstatic - We Were Exploding Anyway
Pulled apart by horses - Pulled apart by horses
both The National and Midlake albums are 2010, I'm sure of that
I'm off to see The National tonight in Brighton - last time I saw them was in a tiny venue with about 50 people in the audience - will be interesting to see them in a biggish venue
Mike Patton - Mondo Cane
Patrick Pulsinger - Impassive Skies
My faves so far.
Mike Patton - Mondo Cane
Emma Pollock - The Law of Large Numbers
Dillinger Escape Plan - Option Paralysis
First Aid Kit - The Big Black and the Blue
Melvins - The Bride Screamed Murder
The Inspector Cluzo - The French Bastards
High on Fire - Snakes for the Divine
HDA - EP
These are all getting played quite a bit at the moment. If I had to pick a best one so far it'd be Mondo Cane for Patton's sheer audacity.
For the Bonnie Prince fans.... what's your favourite track?
I can happily listen to The Sounds are Always Begging, back to back for my whole 30 min commute.
"Hot Chip - one life stand" is my favourite so far
Southern Yeti - yes that is my favorite too.
Also like the one with the line "the smell of your box on my moustache" - only BPB can get away with a line like that on a love song
See? this I love, there are bits of the Hot Chip album I could listen to again and again, others, i just can't be arsed with...
I have to be very much in the mood for BPB (or in a mood, I'm not sure which...)
Love the nationals; Terrible love is just achingly beautiful
grevioustim - I've been wondering whether I've been hearing that line right.
Can't post links to youtube from work but there is a live version of Sounds are Begging on there that is pretty amazing!
Clearly I will have to buy the BPB album 🙂
My favourite so far is Pantha du Prince - Black Noise, purely judged by how much I caned it when first purchased. Beach House album also very much caned, but is 2009 I think.
nickc:See? this I love, there are bits of the Hot Chip album] I could listen to again and again, others, i just can't be arsed with...
Surely that should be over and over and over and over and over?
You mean like a monkey with a miniature cymbal?
davidtaylforth - try Pissed Jeans
Surfer Blood or Male Bonding for me.
Quite enjoyed the new Hold Steady, but they seem to be on a gradual downwards trajectory.
Steve Mason 'Boys Outside'. Sublime.
Having checked WMP it seems I have only 4 albums from this year...
Best, therefore, is easy: Laura Marling - I speak because I can.
Despite being a massive Bonnie Prince Billy fan I've not managed to penetrate the reaches of The Wonder Show... Don't know why.
Favourite re-issue goes to the Runaways, but purely for Cherry Bomb...
Shearwater - The Golden Archipelago
These New Puritans - Hidden
But presently, recently purchased but a few years old, the The Fall Peel Sessions Box Set is on a 6 disc repeat
rj - Memberdavidtaylforth - try Pissed Jeans
Cheers, I'll give them a listen later.
The Mars Volta - Octahedron
I didnt realise they'd released a new album (turns out it was released in 2009). Ive just given it a quick listen and I think it sounds a bit ****, or at least not as good as their other stuff.
Nekrasov - Cognition of Splendid Oblivion
No votes for Kylie yet?
Or Napalm Death's 'Time Waits For No Slave'?
tut tut
I'm surprised at just how Pitchfork/ATP/Drowned in Soundesque music taste is on here!
Pendulum Immersion seems to be a good album so far. I havent bought it yet but I love what I am hearing so far. I loved all of Silico so I am pretty sure I will like this one
Definitely not trying to out obscure anyone but my favourite album of the year so far is by some lads from Sheffield.
The Amistad - Kept Under By A Generation Of Ghosts
+1 for Show Of Hands, particularly the title track of Arrogance Ignorance and Greed
actress "splazsh" thought it might be a bit hyped, but it's excellent.
The Glee Soundtrack.
High Violet is very good. I'm liking Foals' Total Life Forever and after two listens Chemical Bros. new one has massive potential
I'm liking 65daysofstatic very very much indeed. thanks for that one. downloaded also a couple of Lorn tracks, as well, although they're a bit same-y. Cool though. I shall continue to sample every-ones recommendations. There's so much difference in tastes, always surprises me...
Nice one. On Lorn's myspace site there's a bunch of links to free downloads. It's mostly his early stuff, quite experimental. myspace.com/lornnn under "sounds like" IIRC 🙂
HMV sale has Temper Trap's album for £4.99. Love that album.
Love Temper Trap, such a good band live as well. Sweet disposition one of my most favourite songs of last couple of years.
Yeah, saw them in bournemouth a few months back. Wasn't expecting much really, as indie bands have left me cold recently, but must admit I was blown away.
Aye, should have a new thread for bands that are ace live. Top of the list for me
Joy Formidable. Best live band you've never heard of, first album coming out this year (although there's a cracking EP) hopefully should be their breakthrough
Everything Everything. Wasn't expecting much, really really good live.
Quite liking:
The Dead Weather - Sea of Cowards.
Angus & Julia Stone - A Book Like This (prefer Julia's stuff)
+1 for Temper Trap. Didn't want to poke my head above the parapet as they are a bit wet. Great album though.
The Joy Formidable! Nickc, you are a man of taste and distinction. I love that band, saw them first supporting Howling Bells, (who I also whole-heartedly recommend), and headlining in Bristol earlier this year. Can't wait for their actual album, the ep is terrific. Arcade Fire's new album is looking good, the track 6Music is playing is just excellent, as is a Surfer Blood track I heard LaLa play this morning. Laura Marling's album is just outstanding, and The Smoke Fairies are worth checking out, two girls with really English voices playing blues-style bottleneck guitar. They have several ep's out as well.
Clearly going to have to have another crack at the Laura Marling, didn't get on with it at all. Was disappointed with that, Foals and Fionn Regan as second albums. Oversteps by Autechre is great, but not as good as their second album 🙄
Laura is one of those singers whose voice really only starts to show it's strengths after a few listenings; at first it seems a bit lacking in power, but after a while you start to hear a voice whose power is actually kept in check most of the time. It's when you see her live that she comes into her own. I've seen her four times, three this year, twice in one week. She's a very good live performer, I saw her in a 300 capacity venue three weeks ago and it was one of the most enjoyable gigs in thirty-odd years of gig going. Having said that, music is a subjective thing, and you can't make someone like something if they don't want to, there's plenty of excellent bands and singers that I just don't get, but I understand why others do. It's the beauty of music in all it's many varieties.
