I reckon it's pretty hard to go wrong if you pick a hotel in Mitte based on the likes of TripAdvisor or Hotels.com. There's loads of choice at all budgets, and you won't be far from the action.

Personally, I can recommend the Titanic Chausee (crap name but nice hotel) or Novotel - booked through BA Holidays which was incredibly cheap. BA seem to have surprisingly good deals.

Air BnB is worth a punt, but we've rarely found it great value against even good hotel deals.

As for things to do, there have been posts on here before. Berlin do's and dont's But the Budestag / Reichstag is worth a visit.

If you're old enough to remember life before reunification, the best thing I've visited is the old Stasi remand prison in the East of the city at Hoheschoenhausen. It is incredible. Moving, thought provoking, fascinating and bizarre. Just make sure you line up an English tour (unless your German is up to it, in which case you might get one of the old inmates to show you round).

Recommend this place

Lovely hotel with a few good restaurants inside
close to some great restaurants and bars both sides of the river
Great transport links
Walk down to museum Island and Reichstag/t'gate

http://www.burger-meister.de/# - this place is well worth a visit and is close to the start of the remaining wall - likely to be a queue but it moved quickly

Went before xmas and had a good weekend. Christmas markets were good for a visit but obviously now gone.

As above Stasi Museum was really good and interesting.

You can get the Berlin Pass card from the airport which gives free public transport travel which we found pays for itself , especially on the U-Bahn and S-Bahn.

https://www.berlinpass.com/berlin-transport/

Reichstag is worth a visit and the Berlin Wall museum.

Besides that, just explore and see what you come across. Enjoy.

Been loads of times, usually stay at the circus hostel, which even hires out bicycles.

Science museum is pretty good.

Last time we were there we took the train out to Oranienberg and visited Sachsenhausen concentration camp. An Incredibly interesting day out as the camp was one of the first built by the nazis and also expanded and used by the soviets after the war. Be aware that museums often close on a Monday in Germany.

Stasi remand prison in the East of the city at Hoheschoenhausen.

+1.... Very interesting and sobering.

re. Sachsenhausen.... GF and I had a holiday cruising around East Germany a few years back. Driving along a road we see signs for "mass graves". Turned around and had a look, turned out they were mass graves of the victims of the soviets.
Also quite strange that the main entrance to the camp is literally behind the high street in town.

Have a look at Friedrichshain for bars and restaurants. S

Don't drink Astra beer. It is shit and gives you a headache.

Reichstag, Jewish Museum, Stasi Museum.

You'll need public transport as Berlin is quite spread out.

Guide book when we went more or less said "you don't go to Berlin for the local food". So, Mexican and pizza it was...
