Peugeot 107.
Cat developed a crack in the HAZ adjacent to the weld joining the body to the manifold section.
How did I know? Car became very 'throaty' with blowing exhaust sounds!
Replace or weld?
Well it had to come off to do either.
First remove the complete front bumper plastic in one piece.
Removed the cat, did a repair prep using angle grinder, welded up using MIG. Good weld produced.
Replacement reverse of above.
But, why did it crack. Well, the bolt in the fixing bracket lower right was loose, and I believe vibration from the rubber mounter exhaust caused it.
Cost....£8 for 2 gaskets (at a pinch could have reused old ones). 3/4 of a days work on Saturday.
Saving...approx £120 for a cat, and probably £500 garage time.
(Copperslipped all threads on reassembly just in case....).
Good effort. Anyone who can weld can save a fortune on cars.
Note to self as a Transit driver: learn to weld!!!
I used to have a yamaha diversion, commonly on these bikes the collector box would rot, so i got some 2mm plates from work and fabricated a new collector box, then once i had that tacked in place i did the other side and welded it up.
Ive made this sound easy, and tbh it was, if you’re a practical person most jobs are straightforward enough.
mig welding isn’t that hard, and a 240v mig welder isn’t that expensive either, but the immense feeling of satisfaction is worth it.
