I feel sick even saying that phrase. Very few products are so capable of making people look so stupid. Every time I see a staged arrogant photo taken using one of these moronic devices I feel angry.

Anyone want to join me on a campaign to criminalise them?

Count me in.

Selfies are just photographs that nobody else wants to take.

There's only one word for selfies:

Conceit.

I bought one for my CEO as a secret santa present. She loved it, hopefully enough for it to be reflected in my pay review...

This issue is close to the top of my list of things to not really give a shit about... but not so close I won't pointlessly comment 😉

I feel sick even saying that phrase.

Good job you only typed it then...

So it's still ok to ask a stranger to take the photo for you?

fortunately most are people doing "edits" (rather than "videos"), and replacing the sound with their favourite band.
but here in Germany the equivalent of PRS etc. perfoming rights royalty cartel blocks all vids that sound like they may contain music (or indeed "music").
so even if I do accidentally try to see such self gratification, I get a legal warning warning me that I really shouldn't bother.

Now, I don't condone the pouting, cute eyed attention whore crap that is so prevalent on FB and whatnot. However, there was a time where a person would need to seek another person out to get a photo of precious moment, say at a nice beach bar in Brazil with the missus, and as such entrusting your camera to someone unknown. If the beach is as deserted as I like them to be, there is no one to help you capture this precious moment.
For this reason, I say the selfy stick stays.
But not to for the benefit of FB, just for the photo album like.

Nah .... Brilliant invention.

As run past the Tower of London, on the way into work, I don't have to run around the person taking the photo of thier pals/family....All of them are tucked in nice and tight and I dont have to brake my stride.

Not quite sure who's the bigger idiot - the person using the selfie stick or the one getting wound up about it?

I might get one now I know it's annoying 🙂

I guess it beats the old selfie of giving your camera to a random and hoping they don't run off with it. It's strange how many people you see with them though.

All well and good if you have something to sit the camera on.

Would you rate that as more or less annoying than the use of selfie sticks?

I can see there being a really good game at gigs, person has expensive phone on selfie stick getting gig footage, inebriated person takes half a beer in a plastic glass and launches it at said phone covering it in beer and detaching it from the stick into the feet of other gig goers 😀

I hope you're making that up about [s]people [/s] morons taking them into gigs... now that would annoy me. A lot.
(birky's cartoon would be re-enacted)

I'm flattered you log and remember all of my posts Bob. Although I won't bother explaining why your point is pointless as it's quite obvious 🙂

Tumblr's full of selfies, some of them rather rude! Be careful, there are uses of "sticks" 😆

You couldn't walk 5 seconds in Venice this New Years without someone trying to sell you a bloody selfie stick.
I really felt like throwing the sellers in the canal (but didn't as I'm weak and they would probably beat me up).

Don't see the problem with them myself - just something to take a selfie and get the camera a bit further from you.

Not really into selfies to be honest, although it is sometimes nice to get a pic of the Wife & I together when out and about and there's not always someone around to take a pic for us.
Might get myself a selfie stick now I know how annoying they can be!

Presumably you can get them for compacts (so, with a tripod mount), rather than just something to clamp a phone into??

Wouldn't it be easier to stick the camera on a tripod and use the timer function?
Or am I being too simplistic?

Presumably a 'selfie stick' is a lot smaller than a tripod - I'm thinking something like those extending 'aerial' pens all the kids at my school had in the early 90's.
And you don't need to set it all up, get it level, put it on the floor somewhere that someone might bump into......you can adjust the viewpoint instantly, rather than having to move the tripod etc.

I'd still have to use the self timer, as my arms would be too short to reach the shutter button when using a selfie stick.

So, a selfie stick would be easier/lighter to carry, not likely to get in the way and would allow me to shoot multiple viewpoints quickly and easily.....sounds much more convenient than a tripod......
Thanks, iolo, you've re-inforced my desire to get one now!! 😀

Even more egotistical than a selfie stick... skiing in France we saw a bloke with a GoPro on some kind of rotating selfie stick on his head so that the goPro span round and took pictures of him from all kinds of angles.

What perplexes me is why this is suddenly a new thing. They've been around for ever, only they were called monopods.
