Check your local council website for tips near you that accept asbestos.

You'll prob need to pre-book it and take it double bagged and taped.

I've recently replaced this barn roof

Cost £1500 to get rid of the asbestos.

There may well be a high cost, and numerous forms to complete if you ring the council

Check with local council recycling centre / tip.

In London i removed it myself (white suit and appropriate mask) and double wrapped it in plastic sheeting & then booked it into the council tip for disposal. No problems.

In Gloucestershire, the local tip only take up to six 4'x2' bags per year. I had 10'x4' sheets to get rid of. Local disposal firm wanted over £700 to deliver an "asbestos" (means it had doors on it) skip to me, for me to chuck it into. I left mine on the drive for over a year and eventually, through word of mouth, found a guy who dismantles farm buildings, who had an "asbestos" skip & mine went in with his for £100.

A right pain in the arse, i guess it depends on postcode.

PS: Technically you could drop it into a concrete slab, which by rights you can do, but the council could then slap a hazardous waste marker on your property!!!

I considered fly tipping it so many times, but the conscience wouldn't allow it!!!!!!!!!!!

I 'simply' hired proper asbestos skips. Not cheap but worth it to get rid properly.
That said I also had a normal skip and the builders threw a few small bits of asbestos into this one - the waste company emptied the skip, found them and bought them back and a bin bag!

Got rid of mine last year at the local waste site, no cost just double wrapped in poly.

Then again our council are forward thinking as by providing lidded skips they save themselves the additional costs of dealing with dumped asbestos. Next one along to Projects council who are a waste of space when it comes to waste management

Ton, are you in wakey or Leeds postcode? There is a tip in Leeds (kirkstall I think) that will take it. You have to book in and it cost £50 per 200kgs I think. It has to be Double bagged in the correct gauge plastic, and that stuff. There is a pet online that gives the info.

I'm having mine done on Wednesday by grimstine garages and they are disposing of my asbestos roof for £200, so I decided not to bother with it myself.

Qwerty, your asbestos is now almost certainly illegally contaminating some ground somewhere now, you may as well have fly tipped it. £100 for that much material is way too cheap. Landfill tax and gate fees run to £108 a tonne at the moment, that's for standard waste not hazardous waste which is way more.

If you think it was disposed of safely you could always ask the person who "dismantles farm buildings" to supply you with the hazardous waste consignment note to show it was disposed of at a properly regulated waste site.

I also assume the person who did this great deal for you cares about the health of himself/workers and people around where the waste was dumped, or maybe not. Anyway, doesn't matter, it's not as if asbestosis is a particularly nasty, painful and distressing way to die, is it? 🙄

Ton - Foxhall Environmental, based in Birstall. Decent company with proper authorisations. No idea on price but not worth cutting corners.

They're taking it off and fitting a new one. Just checked the quote and it's actually £330 for removal and disposal of the asbestos roof. Don't know where I got £200 from!! Still don't think it's a bad price as it save a hell of a lot of messing about.
My garage is pretty standard sized, one car sized garage.

Soggy, saturated asbestos cement really is at the benign end of the spectrum. Double bagged and taken to the dump would be fine I would think. The woolly insulation used inside walls is another matter entirely (look through the window next time you pass Culra Bothy).
