I've had a few quotes for removing/skimming the lovely artex (dappled type, not too deep) ceilings in some rooms.

Some quotes include bonding, some grit(?) and some nothing (because they say the artex is shallow and once scraped, won't need bonding).

Any comments/thoughts on what is 'right' or best practice at least?

Some artex contained asbestos, so go easy on the 'scraping' 😯

Grit is also a bonding agent..............with extra grit added.

Can't comment on the best thing to do.

When I had it done I bonded it myself (pva) to save some cost.

As above, be aware of the asbestos risk.

Good point though all quotes have said they'd scrape it - I'm presuming they'd know asbestos though that has made me consider that I should check they're qualified to do so.

I normally scrape, pva, then skim over. It needs to be really
bad to warrant bonding first. Bonding btw, is a type of undercoat plaster.
Very often, the artex is loose and the whole lot comes off easily if you get under it. Sometimes it's actually plaster instead, in which case, you'll have fun scraping it. 😀
