The modern phenomenon of a group of friends sitting together while individually staring at their smartphones is one that leaves a bitter taste, especially in the mouths of restaurant owners who are finding the atmosphere in their venue is being killed. Weโve already seen Singporeโs Social Rehab offer drink discounts for those who agreed to leave their device at the door, and now Canadaโs Faraday Cafรฉ has gone even further, using a unique architectural design to create a space where all phone and wifi signals are blocked.
Not a bad idea IMO.
Yes, I see the irony of posting this on a social media forum! Be interesting to see what response I get to my Facebook posting of it... ๐
Is Faraday the clue? Do you just put a metal cage around the room?
Good idea, whatever. I wish my wife and son would talk to me when I buy them coffee in town.
a unique architectural design
I thought a Faraday Cage was physics, not architecture ๐
It's a nice idea, but basically symbolic.
Anyone who doesn't want a break from social media would just refuse to go there. Anyone who does want a break can generally manage the self-discipline to avoid looking at their phone for 30 minutes. ๐
That is frankly a brilliant idea.
I've got to the point where I just tell people that if they'd rather look at their phone than me I'll leave. Normally I then have to leave ๐
Instead of people staring at their phones it will be people waving them above their heads trying to get a signal!
A million times yes. I've often wished this was compulsory in cinemas, theatres, schools etc.
I've also often wished I had my own short-range EMP.
Anyone else gone for a meal where all phones go in the middle of the table and first to crack gets the bill?
What you need is a wave bubble, a personal jammer that blocks wifi and phone signals in a your local vicinity.
someone did it as a degree project, totally illegal unfortunately.

Making a truly effective faraday cage is harder than you might think. Bloke at work used to have a hand in doing such things and has spoken to us (at great length) about the trouble with them. It is, apparently, not just a case of sticking tin foil to the windows and walls.
Tesco have managed it. My phone only works within 10ft of the front door. Which is good for people looking where they are going rather than paying with their phones and bad for when I have to phone the missus mid-shop to confirm what colour hair dye etc I am supposed to be picking up.

widely available though and widely used. Ofcom did a survey and found GPS jammers in use all over the place (probably on stolen vehicles to block Tracker etc).
Just google for GPS / GSM jammer...
I recall watching a documentary about the effects of mobile phone masts on the nearby residents, one of them had issues sleeping so put a faraday cage (looked more like a budgie cage tbh) over their bed and showed their phone lost all signal upon entry and reckoned it helped them sleep better.
That or never sharing a bed with anyone again through looking like a tool anyway.....
I recall watching a documentary about the effects of mobile phone masts on the nearby residents,
A better test would be to have switched the mast off without telling them and seen if the 'issues' went away. (They wouldn't.)
No mobile or internet signal in the building MrsT works. Caused some concern when they had to simulate an emergency which was being co ordinated by bosses 70mls away, communication was to be done through her works mobile!! Even though she had highlighted the issue at meetings the "procedure" had to be followed...... ๐
Just some of the issues it's hoped Wee Eck and his cronies "promise" to fix after indy........
The Premier inn at Quintrell Downs have done a very good job of blocking the 3G signal that is quite strong outside in the car park from the rooms. Oh its lucky they do a pay to use WiFi service then. Cynical? Moi?
