It's been a while since we have had a thread with some of our smaller friends. I've been sorting a few out so here are some photos.

B.jacksoni Are a beautiful scorpion native to Uganda, Tanzania way. This is an adult female

a juvenile

and some scorplings under UV lighting
[img] [/img]

They can be quite a sociable species and as long as they have enough food can live together.

though they can fight over food occasionally
[img] [/img]

To sex a scorpion you need to look at their ventral (underside).
At the central section nearing the "head" end they have Pectines and a Genital Operculum. Both can be seen here
[img] [/img] (The head would be to the left of the photo)

The pectines are the comb shapes bits and the genital operculum the circular disc shape in the centre of them. Male scorpions tend to have much longer pectines, usually sticking out further than the sides of the body. If you look at the photo above you can see the operculum is divided, almost heart shaped. This identifies the scorp as female. If it was a male, the disc would not be divided and would be more circular.

Now a few indulgent photos

B.smithi semi adult female
[img] [/img]

a very smallB.vegans
(from the same family as the smithi above)
[img] [/img]

C. meridionalis a beautiful spider from Africa
[img] [/img]

a runaway C.cyaneopubescens Adult female
[img] [/img]

An unsexed H.albostriatum
[img] [/img]

and a lovely

P.murinus Unsexed but I suspect a female
[img] [/img]

I will finish with a a couple of P.regalis photos
This female feeding
[img] [/img]

Hopefuly this photo will give an idea of their size.

Getting all misty-eyed at your b. smithi pic. Bought my own when I was eight years old. I was 29 by the time she finally kicked the bucket. What a spider she was...
