Do I connect it to;
a, The TV
b, The Tivo
c, The DVD/Surround sound unit
d, The Virgin Superhub
Help, please, someone.

I've got my Apple TV connected to the tv ...but out of all those I've only got the tv and surround sound DVD

Does the surround unit have HDMI pass through to the TV?
If yes then I assume your TV is connected to the HDMI out from the surround unit?
If yes to this as well connect your Apple TV to the Internet and to your surround unit by HDMI.
If no , connect it to the Internet and directly to your TV via HDMI.
Also if you have iTunes on your home computer, enable home sharing on both devices so you can access the content on the home computer from the Apple TV.
