I'm off to NYC in a few weeks and I'd like to use my iPhone for data use, directions or looking up stuff would be useful. I've seen some stuff on the net which might work ok but has anyone any real world use? Can I pick something up from the airport?

When in SanFran at the beginning of the month I picked up a T-Mobile Pay as You Go sim, used them many times before and always work well in the iPhone. They’ve changed their plans since last year, now if you make a call or send a text you will be charged $3, for that you get 30 minuets and 30 text for a day, if you don’t make a call or text in a day then you won’t be charged. For data you can get a 1 week unlimited data pass, this at $10 gives you 1GB at 4G for 7 days, if you go over the 1GB the speed reduces, I guess to 3G.

You'll probably need to get to a T-Mobile store, the airport sims ie Jersey Telecom are bit rubbish and expensive.

Went there a year or so ago and there's that much free wifi we never felt like we were missing out. All restaurants and most public parks have free access and there's always the Apple Store at the park end of 5th Avenue.

I used the 'Feel At Home' from my Three contract while in NYC, worked perfectly on AT&T and T-Mobile networks. It's included on their contracts, along with 'free' 4G and 0800 numbers, I wish I could find the catch on my £15/month contract with All You Can eat data....

I was going to go with Three recently but the reception is so bad where we live it wasn't worth doing.

I went last year and found there was plenty of WiFi around. I also used the trip advisor offline city guide, I found that extremely useful when locating places!

I forgot about that trip advisor offline app, it does look good but not used it yet.

Three. 'at home' is very handy. Reception I've had in NJ & NYC has been fine when I've had to visit.
