Any special issues, or unexpected benefits?
We've just upgraded one in the office today and will be testing it out tomorrow before upgrading the remaining laptops - will report back then....
absolutely not!
it breaks Lightroom, Photoshop, Capture-One, Helicon Focus,Eizo Colour navigator, Chronosync and Wacom tablet drivers. any 32bit application will not work either.
All essential for my business. i’m in the middle of a 2 week job and i would be stupid to update right now, it will cost me time and money.
anyone who updates on day 1 is crazy. maybe fine if you just use Safari and email sat in cafe’s with your MacBook but not if your business depends on it.
Aah - I see - on Googling it seems that C1 won't work properly until PhaseOne migrate it to use Metal 🙁
Even worse, WhatsApp desktop no longer supports emojis.
I'd be cautious about this one. Lots of problems reported with audio apps too. Always a good idea to give them time to work out the bugs.
I have done it... everything I need seems to be there and working.... WhatsApp desktop Emojis are good to go.. Only thing I reinstalled was basecamp and thats fine now.
Apple TV and Podcasts, well, may ditch them... and I have to find my playlists on iTunes when I plug my iPad in.
Other than that, seems fine.
I’ve installed it in my iMac and it’s running poorly with lots of issues.
Music keeps crashing and struggling to load. General slow responsiveness at times.
Using sidecar on my iPad caused a few iPad issues after disconnecting.
Overall, quite like it but looking forward to the patches.

Incoming emoji didn’t appear. Was just blank. Will try later.
I did it Tuesday morning - as others have said, should have waited.
For me it borked webex event centre (files uploaded to share are corrupted), latest webex fix does not solve it.
Sidecar worked great once, and I mean really great, way better than airdisplay that I used before. Its my main reason for upgrading to Catalina.... But it requires both a Mac and iPad restart to get it to work more than once. :-/
Music is very flaky, but everything else seems OK.
Lightroom et al *still* being 32-bit is the problem I've got. Goddamnit Adobe, I mean it's not like Apple surprised you with this change, they've literally been telling people to stop building 32-bit for years.
+1anyone who updates on day 1 is crazy.
will try it when all the issues are fixed, looking forwards to Sidecar.
Adobe are notorious for dragging their heels over this sort of thing!!
Wow, didn't realise adobe had issues, thats a major f-up!
I did. Will be reverting to previous backup when I'm home, where my external hard drive is (that was stupid).
I've had my laptop (2018 Air) crash once already. That's once more than in the rest of the time I've owned it. Basic things like screensavers don't work properly. Ditching iTunes is also an issue for me. The new music app seems to be impossible to customise so that you can browse music by artist, song, album on one screen. You can also no longer listen to podcasts on the music app. The podcast app crashed when I tried to use it. It also seems to show that I have previously listened to some podcasts that I definitely haven't, which is annoying.
Basically, almost every program I've tried to use has issues.
Oh, and my version of Office will no longer work. I knew I'd have to upgrade soon but it's another expense/annoyance..
Yep did it yesterday clean install no probs so far. Does not break photoshop as far as i can see and ver7 of eizo works fine. Its on my i9 imac main platform for repro running adobe cc and a high end specialist native pdf editor and all good. Adobe say Acrobat DC doesnt work but it does. Only thing so far is Distiller but i can do without that.
dont forget once indexing sorts itself out should run better, leave on overnight normally deals with that.
Works fine on my 2015 12” MacBook. Only use it for web browsing and music etc though.
All well here on premiere pro and Lightroom etc.
Nope. 2010 Mac Mini is just a bit too elderly to upgrade any further.
I've had several emails from audio/music companies telling me not to upgrade as their software doesn't work with Catalina. I generally wait until at least x.4 to make sure everything's been ironed out - was an essential precaution back when i was self employed, and just kind of a habit now.
edit
also, i looked at the new extra features and there's nothing particularly amazing IMO
No issues (mainly used for spreadsheets, word processing and browsing STW) other than Office 2011 now no longer works... think I might spend some time figuring out how to use Pages, Numbers and Keynote instead though.
Do Apple not release this to software vendors up front then?
The public beta was available last month, developer versions were available before that.
Any special issues, or unexpected benefits?
Unexpected: Office needs upgrading, by that I mean back into the App Store to reload it all.. works fine now. iTunes has changed but essentially the same, had no issues playing podcasts or music or finding any artists/music etc. Photos has changed the main screen view, but all photos are there and albums too... last night I deleted 8k of photos and it was easy. iTV I like and I’ll use that sometime soon. Bluetooth link to speakers a bit iffy, has dropped out after an hour of playing music and needs to reset and linked again.
Other than that it seems fine, but I’m not a heavy user... I’m expecting plenty of updates and patches having read some of the issues.
Upgraded. No real problems.
A few old screensavers no longer work. A couple of apps crashed first time, then worked ok. I'm disappointed to learn that I cannot use the "iPad as extra screen" thingy, but I've been using an app to do that for years anyway.
As well as having a less-customisable interface, the sound quality from the new music app is awful. This only became apparent when I connected up to external speakers. I thought the jack plug wasn't in properly it was that bad. Confirmed by playing the same tracks through VLC which was a vast improvement.
I haven't found a positive yet.
I have another unexpected issue:
In iTunes, when backing up my phone to iTunes, it was a fairly simple process and you could watch progress and easily navigate to the screen... now it's hidden and have to use the left menu to navigate tot he screen, then hit Sync Settings to get the screen up.. then they've changed the actual progress bar (used to be on top of the header bar) to just a spinning wheel of death on the Devices menu bar in the left column..
And an AMPDevicesAgent popup comes up where it asks for the laptops PW to enable it...
I preferred the old screen where you could watch progress... But thats Apple progress for you... If you were new to doing this, I'm sure many would just go "where the **** is the sync menu you tossers"
🤷♂️
Seems OK to me so far though use so far has been fairly lightweight.
WhatsApp desktop
I’d given up on that anyway - do you find it reliable? Every few weeks mine would go into either a failed upgrade loop or repeatedly demand to install “helper” app. WhatsApp Web in Safari seems to be be just as usable, quicker to open and more reliable.
Office needs upgrading
Really? So I’d been using an OEM copy of 2016 bought from eBay. It had previously upgraded itself to 64bit but when the HD failed in my iMac and i reinstalled it tried to get me to move to 365 and seemingly would no longer use OfficeUpdate to get the same 64bit versions. Deleted the apps, installed the 64bit versions from the Timemachine backup of my laptop and ran the licence install app again and its fine.
Lots of OEM office installations on eBay for very little money...
Office needs upgrading
Yeah, it did with mine...
The big fat W and E in my taskbar had a mahoosive X on it.. clicked it and it went straight to the AppStore and simply reloaded it...
Works fine now..
Put it on my MBP. Initially in another HD volume, thought I'd try it, come across issues, so easy to switch back until they sorted everything.
Turns out everything works fine for me. So imported my photos, music and films. Quite happy with it. I'll keep Mojave somewhere so I can still use Aperture if I want to - do need to sort that and find another photo app.
The wife's MBA she uses professionally for music composing, won't touch that. Her Mac is usually a full OS version behind.
Moar Obvz from this side of an MacAir...
I too encountered the "muffled" sound coming out of iTunes (gah, music) I have my Air blue toothed to a JBL Extreme2 and pre the Catalina upgrade the sound coming out of iTunes was clear and loud.. since the upgrade I noticed the sound was gradually getting more muffled and sounded like it was being strangled or played through bin..
So i contacted Apple Support via Chat and they said to follow these instructions, and its sorted it!

If you have the same issues, follow these (it ain't hard)
<h1 id="howto-title">Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac</h1>
<div class="intro">If your Mac has issues related to settings stored in NVRAM or PRAM, resetting it might help.
</div>
<div></div>
<div id="sections">
<div id="" class="">
<div>NVRAM (nonvolatile random-access memory) is a small amount of memory that your Mac uses to store certain settings and access them quickly. PRAM (Parameter RAM) stores similar information, and the steps for resetting NVRAM and PRAM are the same.
Settings that can be stored in NVRAM include sound volume, display resolution, startup-disk selection, time zone, and recent kernel panic information. The settings stored in NVRAM depend on your Mac and the devices that you're using with your Mac.
If you experience issues related to these settings or others, resetting NVRAM might help. For example, if your Mac starts up from a disk other than the one selected in Startup Disk preferences, or a question mark icon briefly appears before your Mac starts up, you might need to reset NVRAM.
</div>
</div>
<div id="" class="">
<h2>How to reset NVRAM</h2>
<div>
Shut down your Mac, then turn it on and immediately press and hold these four keys together: Option, Command, P, and R. You can release the keys after about 20 seconds, during which your Mac might appear to restart.
- On Mac computers that play a startup sound, you can release the keys after the second startup sound.
- On Mac computers that have the Apple T2 Security Chip, you can release the keys after the Apple logo appears and disappears for the second time.
<span class="callout">If your Mac is using a firmware password, this key combination does nothing or causes your Mac to start up from macOS Recovery. To reset NVRAM, first turn off the firmware password.</span>
When your Mac finishes starting up, you might want to open System Preferences and adjust any settings that were reset, such as sound volume, display resolution, startup disk selection, or time zone.

Just a wee update from me on this - 10.15.2 seems to finally have solved all the issues on my computer, and my most used installed apps are all (fingers crossed!) working oK now.
Bluetooth issues fixed, sidecar working as it should, apps happy, me happy.
