[#12068091]

I was driving behind an AO.com van today through the village of Greenhow in the Yorkshire dales, when out of the passenger window multiple food wrappers get lobbed out followed by and empty beer can and disposable coffee cup. I caught this all on my car’s dash cam, but you can’t quite make out the reg, however I do remember it.

I’m not normally someone to name and shame but this was taking the biscuit, company van and in a National park.. come on

Question is, is there anything I can do?

Tell the company and maybe local environmental health or whoever it is gives the fines for littering

empty beer can

I'm sure their transport manager would be interested. Then again, given the shortage of drivers, maybe not...

Depends how seriously you think AO will take it. If you think they'll take it seriously, then send it direct to them. If you think you'll be fobbed off, then it sounds like a job for Twitter.

How outraged are you and do you want the driver or his mate to lose his job? (Which window?)

And open a job opportunity for someone who's less of a tool? Sounds good.
The job needs done, let someone better have it

There's no excuse for it this was on the local fb group today

I'm certainly no fan of littering and the responsible person needs pulling up on it. However, job loss could have much further reaching consequences.

There's also the fact that fear of losing a job might have a greater effect on behaviour than the sense of embitterment from actually losing it.

It came from the passenger window.

I don’t get why it was so difficult for them to discard their rubbish when they arrived back at the depot, I would assume that they also did it at that location for the fact that it was the middle of nowhere and they perhaps thought nobody was watching. It demonstrates a level of disrespect to their surroundings and other people, I would not like to have these individuals in my house fitting a washing machine.

I have messaged AO in instagram as it’s easier to send them a video that way for now

What’s job loss got to do with OP. His issue is with dickish behaviour. It’s up to employer / environmental health to figure out what to do. It’s up to the perp to deal with any consequences.

Report it.

The point was, the method of reporting would likely influence the response.

Doing it publicly on social media would more likely lead to a harsher response so the company doesn't look soft on this sort of thing.

I'd report direct to the company and if they decide to terminate, fair enough.

Judging by the amount of trash, including food wrappers, cans, coffee cups, etc, that I see in vans and hire/lease vehicles, like Enterprise and Arval, I’m surprised the passenger saw fit to lob their crap out of the window, instead of dropping it on the floor, under the seats, in the door pockets, like they usually do.

The ceo is quite active on Twitter. Post an image up and tag them in it, they’ll be all over it

Are you kidding? I'd have pulled over and rung their head office there and then.

Absolutely no excuses. Rule 1, as above.

And send in the footage and reg to whomever the relevant police department is,most have an online portal.

And maybe in their new job they might think twice before lobbing their litter out of the windows
Unfortunately, they wont. Scum people will always be scummy and will just lob it when there is no car following close enough to see

I once saw a bloke chuck a fag packet out the window while he was parked up in Reeth. I went & picked it up & lobbed it back in, telling him in no uncertain terms what I thought.
I’d do it again. I’d have been inclined to stop & pick it up, catch the van & wait till he stopped & give him it back, reminding him I’ve got it on dashcam. I know that road well BTW.
I find McDonalds crap everywhere I go on the bike, naffs me right off.

Why is it almost always McDonald's and KFC, almost never the local chippy or Indian takeaway?

Having pulled AO up before (making a delivery and stopped on zigzags outside a primary school), I’d expect them to take any complaint seriously.

Report it directly. It's up to AO as to how seriously they take it. If they decide it's a sacking offence then that's on them not you.

If you don't get an acceptable response, to wit action had been taken and the occupants warned, then take it to social media.

Packaging. It's a lot harder to eat a chicken tikka masala with rice and a side order of poppadoms whilst driving.

I saw someone drop a mask out their window at a junction a while back. I'm normally pretty mild-mannered but I flipped and saw red to be honest.

Followed them all over town in my van until I could pull up alongside and ask them just what the flippin effin duck they were doing. 😂

Complete and utter selfish A-holes.

Shop him good. No need to consider someone who doesn't consider anyone. 👍

And yet I never seem to find Waitrose or Sainsbury's sandwich packaging, or craft beer bottles, when picking up litter.

Went out on foot along the local railway track with bag and grabber four days ago, fed up with grinding my teeth while cycling along it. Got this in two km, too big to fit into my 70l rucsac.

My plastic/cans recycling bag had been empty before I sorted this into it:

Local chippy usually doesn't have a drive through. These people are too lazy to get out for food

We have an A0 depot on the same industrial estate as us. (Avonmouth) They drive like complete tools, without exception. I have been stood outside talking to a customer when one stopped and opened the passenger door, he then proceeded to kick out all the rubbish from the cab floor. Right in front of us! He was probably 200m from the depot! The caliber of driver they have is low.

They’re open 24/7, they’re cheaper and of course instantly recognisable.

That's fantastic. Can't help think you'll be grinding your teeth even worse though when it inevitably returns 😥

I sometimes wonder if actually not picking these moron's rubbish up for a while, letting it completely go, might make something click for them. As it is, they chuck it out and eventually, someone comes along and picks it up for them.
Doubtful though.

Environmental Health at the council, it's not a police matter. You'll need to be available for a court date and convince that you will attend. They send out a letter asking for some money or a chance for the miscreant to have their day in court.

Please report.
I absolutely detest people who litter.
Even a cig butt being discarded is a massive no no.

@sandwich im not sure you are correct there. In NWales the Police give nonendorsable penalties for litering from motor vehicles.

Without meaning to come across as rude, you saw someone in a company vehicle throwing crap out of it in a national park and you're asking whether you should do something about it? Of course you should. The effort you went to writing the question on a bike forum could have been spent writing an email to them, cc'ing in North Yorkshire Police and the National Park.

I think it's the other way round.

I picked up about 25 discarded bags of dog excrement hanging from trees alongside my normal dog walk a few years ago, before lockdown, and it's still not returned.

Oh, and yes, report them.

That’s the reason they’re popular, not the reason a large % of their customers are Dicks.

It's really galling to me to see E.g. the Peak District being littered out of sheer selfish laziness.

It really irritates me, but I suspect that's a symptom of my middle-class upbringing. Clearly there's a whole load of people who don't see it as such an issue, perhaps because where they live they have bigger problems than a few stray crisp packets.

I don't know what the answer is. But moaning about to like-minded people doesn't get the job done.

And yet I never seem to find Waitrose or Sainsbury’s sandwich packaging, or craft beer bottles, when picking up litter.

Kudos for picking the litter though - I definitely think there is an inertia effect, where if people see litter lying about they'll be more inclined to copy. People don't want to be the first.

I hate litter obviously and litterers. In the countryside as opposed to town I guess it's more likely to be a fluffy squirrel than a diseased pigeon that could potentially be harmed by some of it.Or fed. But really is it worse to drop litter in Greenhow (actually just outside the national park in the nidderdale area of outstanding natural grouse shooting) rather than Keighley (rough, basically) say?

I always respect the boundaries of the National Park when fly-tipping. Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty? Fair game.
