That hugely deep tunnel cut down into the cliffs, incredible and never even heard of it!
I turned over a minute ago.
I'm watching. Interesting stuff.
'kin Holby 🙁
Yup, very interesting. All the more so when you realise it was over a mile inland at the time. How the blinkin flip did they drop a vertical shaft nearly 150ft deep, probably with little more than stone or deerhorn tools. The footholds visible in the walls of the 1970s photo were a tad alarming; suspect a few poor souls fell in there and died while it was in use.
I guess there could be other shafts that have filled in but not been lost to the sea.
Looked small enough to brace back against the wall and use foot holes to progress up. Probably not pleasant but that dangerous.
I’ve googled it but can’t find a picture of the shaft. Anyone got a link?
You’re damn wrong.
Fascinating programme, the thought of digging that shaft is, quite frankly, sodding terrifying!
I have a real fear of very confined spaces, potholing with things like sumps scares me shitless!
I honestly can’t imagine digging something like that.
Where's the tunnel so I can google it?
WELL?

WELL?
Yes, it was
Watched it but didn't like the format of the program. Seems like it could have been a 30 minute program but they stretched it out. Also jumping from the ship, to the well/hole to the port was annoying. Should have focused on one thing at a time.
The well is still there and it can clearly be seen by anyone.
What you can't see is the surrounding chalk anymore.
IGMC.
