Thinking of getting back into open water swimming and our pre-owned dog seems to enjoy the water. I've found a site that's willing to let the dog swim with me so just wondering if anyone has experience or advice about flotation aids and waterproof lines I can use?

Swimming with our dog is a nightmare!  She seems to believe that we can't swim and need rescued, which since she won't use her mouth (taught not to bite) leads to extensive 'clawing'.

I'd also question if a dog could swim far enough or fast enough to make it anything other than some play?  While ours is a great swimmer, I can easily outpace her (I'm no star in the water) and I doubt she could swim the sort of distances I would want to, to make it worthwhile

I've no doubt I can go faster and further in the water than Bella. The idea was maybe she could do a slow lap with me, then the wife and Bella can sit on the shore and enjoy the weather.

The focus is the dog though. Just another way to engage with her and keep her stimulated.

Our labrador used to do the whole saving us from drowning thing. Was quite scary sometimes as he was a big bugger with no life saving skills as such.

Our lab is a strong swimmer, he loves the water but he's only been in the water for relatively small stretches (e.g. 10 mins swiming at a time). Would love to have a swim with him to see how it goes but would definitely be one to try without the kids!

He'll amaze you with the distance he can swim. Their stamina is incredible, considering their swimming style seems so eratic.

As long as you do the doggy paddle stroke you'll be fine.

My last collie loved to swim, but as soon as I got in- she got out and just watched me.

Present one loves the water hut prefers to not go in past his elbows, I don't think he likes to get his nob wet 🙂

They both can swim tho. We put them in a bouyancy aid when out in the canoe, as much for the handle on the back as anything but I don't think it helps them swim, it looks like it might lift the body and put the nose lower if anything. I wouldn't swim in a bouyancy aid either I s'pose.

Funny, I'm the exact opposite 🙂
