Ours is 10 years old and has developed a fault.
Is it simply a case of swapping out the pump unit and controller or will that end in (expensive) tears?

we had one replaced just still in warranty
they would have replaced the whole unit but would have had to rip out the ceiling so asked if we'd rather they just replace the controller

No access problems to either the controller or the pump with mine.

Ours was dead easy to replace - the new one had the same fault as old one, then I discovered a mouse had chewed through half of the control cable which was causing it to act up...
