[#4067653]

I know many people on here have and rate the post 2008 Mondeo estate but does anyone specifically have any experience of the 2.2 TDCI with 175hp?

I would like to buy one here in Switzerland at a good price but its done about 100,000 miles. Any issues I should be aware of?

Thank in advance.

why such a powerful car for a country that hates cars (according to Jeremy clarkson)

Because if I have to have a car most commonly used by golf playing men in their 50s, I at least want it to have some poke to make it fun on the Alpine passes ๐Ÿ™‚

Reliable but the earlier models had some teething troubles which should have been fixed under recall. Even though the engine is rated at 175bhp it is in a heavierr car than the previous model so the extra power is lost in the extra bulk. Have a look on talk ford for more details.

Bloke a couple of doors away has a 2.2 estate he uses it to tow his boat. He just throws everything in the back and drives off.

I have a 163bhp 2.0 tdci saloon it doesn't hang about

Yeah because 175bhp in a large saloon should be a veritable ferrari killer!

Good cars. 100,000 mile shouldn't be an issue if its been serviced properly. Some known issues with steering rack failure so have this checked

Thanks for the comments. I've read around on honest john and there really are very few bad points about this car. Normally you read a whole list of possible problems or recalls but with this car, virtually nothing.

I can't find any details on talk ford, anyone have a specific link?

I've seen this on a few cars, most of them quite new models so not much data to share/be out there yet from disgruntled motorists. You only tend to post when a car is either a lemon within warranty or you are having to pay for the repairs (i.e. over 3yrs old).

I've got the 2.0 "140" Estate. It's a very good car (although in some ways I preferred my Mk3, particularly the narrower width & better outward visibility)

The 2.0 won't out-drag a Fireblade, but it's got useful grunt and climbs steep UK roads without problem. I've had faster cars in the past and ride a motorbike, but the Mondeo never feels under-powered on the road (my Mk3 "130" only felt as if it needed more power whilst cruising at 120+mph on the German autobahn with the air con running...) and the handling and ride for a big estate car are excellent.

The Mk4 engine is supposed to be more reliable than the Mk3, but my Mk3 never went wrong anyway.

The 2.2 should give a more than adequate performance.

I have the 200bhp 2.2 in an smax. It's OK, not great on fuel (i get 42mpg drving like a granny, and more like 37mpg driving normally). It probably more power then a smax needs...might make more sense in a Mondeo as the handling is better.

Unless you really want the extra power, i'd go for the 2.0 and save some dosh.

Not heard of any reliability horror stories with them, other than the usual DMF / Injector issues.

ps. Having given the 2.0 engine, intake piping, sensors etc. a good checking-over and cleaning and running through a bottle of decent injector cleaner, I'm achieving (an indicated)60-odd mpg on cruise control at (an indicated)70-75mph.

Mustn't grumble.

Unless you really need the space, i'd avoid!

If anyone cares, I had the 155bhp 2.2 engine in my old Mondeo ST and it was excellent. So much so, I'm going to change my Octy vRS wagon for a (very) late Mondeo ST estate later this year.

Did 35k in less than 18 months in it and it was wholly reliable (apart from the alternator going and the DMF needing doing when I got rid of it but it was sat on 120k+ so was to be expected!).

Thanks for the help. Can anyone give further info on the DPF issues? Also, what should I look for that needs to be, or should have been changed? Cam belt or is this engine chain cam? DPF filter? Clutch?

I'm off to see the car tomorrow evening. Apparently it has FSH and has been driven by a salesman mainly on motorways.

DPF issues appear to arise on cars that don't get warmed-up properly.
-I'm assuming that a big, powerful diesel estate car will be used for long journeys at speed. If so, then it shouldn't be an issue. If not, then it may not be the tool for the job anyway.

-I've never noticed my car doing a forced re-gen, but the shortest journey it ever makes is a 12 mile motorway trip, although it is usually much further.

Any dual-mass clutches can wear out and I don't think the Mk4 Mondeo is any different to any other car. 100,000 miles might mean a new clutch will be due soon, but it might not.

I don't know if the 2.2 is chain or belt.

The car will be used mostly for travelling at weekends to go riding and skiing in the mountains. This is usually at least an hour on the motorway. Shortest journey would be to work which is a 10 min drive through traffic but perhaps I might only do this once a week if I have too much stuff to carry.

Can't see why they'd have changed it but the pre-2008 Mondeo 2.2 engine (and 2.0 I think) were all chains, not belts.

the old engines were Ford, the newer (2.0 at least) is based on a Peugeot.

I think its now a belt which is not ideal so I should check that its been changed.

Belt's still not the end of the world, just get it changed when the DMF fails ๐Ÿ˜‰

Off to see a 2.2 Ghia mk3 myself tomorrow so reading with interest... Doesn't seem to have many drawbacks compared to the 2.0, and some advantages.
