I'm considering a Stovax Riva 22 Open Convector fire Mounted in my wall similar to the link below. Anyone got one or had experience of similar? Prefer the thought of an open fire to a stove but am aware they are less efficient. Any reasons to avoid like the plague or any happy stories?

Open fire = very inefficient, dirty and suck warm air constantly from a room whether it's lit or not
Stove = the opposite of the above

After fitting one stove I couldn't cope with our other open fire so have finally fitted an inset stove into that one as well - its a big room and the stove has made it so much warmer than with the open fire.

agree with sharkbait, you loose too much heat and they can bother some people with breathing difficulties, if you go for an inset, check out the type with a buit in fan.

one small issue with fires is the use up the air in the room creating a negative pressure inside the room, this can make for uncomfortable draughts, if its possible to give the fire its own air supply piped from outside- much like a modern combi gas boiler does - worth it!

Best thing I ever did fitting the stove in place of the open fire. It's provided tons more heat using a fraction of the wood.

It's a no brainer if you have access to the fuel.

You have gone for a rather draughty location there though mcmoonter, no wonder you're open fire was gash.

Hmmm.

That Riva is an open convector which along with its radiated heat is supposed to suck cool air in the bottom and convect warm air out of the top into the room. I've got an open gas fire in the room at the moment so there is already heat being lost up the chimney so I assume that would not be any worse with the riva.

if you are going to change it would you not want an upgrade? ๐Ÿ˜‰

i would seal arount the flue and have a fan type. no heat gets wasted burn less, stay cosy!
