[i]Approach into Karubaga
Karubaga’s a 650m tarmac runway with a 9% average up-slope and is tucked into the Papuan mountains at 4700 feet. The apron sits at just under 4900 feet and has quite a slope to get up onto it. This does make for quite a fast initial acceleration on take-off which makes aborting pretty much impossible, especially as there’s a sizable drop at the end. We’re told to swerve left off the runway if you are going to abort, rather than go off the end.

that's a very odd shaped heli-pad
That's a pretty flash runway for PNG 🙂
Hopefully the England squad will be playing a friendly away against Karubaga town sometime soon.
Whats the wind speed like and direction etc? THATS my worry!
would love to land and take off there it looks like a lovely place, have landed and taken off at lukla and jomoson, wind direction and seems to make a bit of differene, although my fav is the helicopter ride to Mugu and landing on the school grounds at teh end of the ridge.
looks like the one in James Bond!
That's an altiport not an airport and AIUI you need special certification for landing there? might be that the certification is "able to pay exorbitant landing fees" mind, as Courchevel is a very expensive ski resort 😉
my parents have landed on that one in papua new guinea. Apparently the plane was overlaiden to get up the dip in the middle of the runway so they literally got off the plane as it nearly stopped on the dip with some bags so it could get up.
😕 Im glad i wasnt born by then...
I wanna go! Anyone know which airlines fly there?!
I was gonna say - I'd feel perfectly happy landing there..
.. in a helicopter.
i was going to say doesnt it count as an altiport?
I'd rather fly in there than into addis ababa at noon....
I guess it depends on the plane.

I am with IanM on this one, depends on the plane, but it does look interesting!! Mountain winds/air / heat will be the issue. I always liked the scene in Air America where he says "lighten up on that stick we are landing there" a 30 degree very short strip.
I have watched the two seat Shadow take off from a cricket pitch between the creases, do a circuit within the field and land just about between the creases.
haha wicked..

might need more runway.
