Mine was horrific, so i started from scratch and it took a few days to get going. It's still unpredictable; some days it's fine, some it crawls - regardless of restarts.

If your running malware bytes,they've messed up an update and it's maxing out processors. The fix is being pushed out now.

thanks all - funnily enough even while I was asking the initial question I'd wondered if it was MWB as that was hogging quite a lot of resource

I'd been buggering about with Chrome extensions too and initially wondered if it actually was malware that was hard to deal with but a reinstallation of MWB seems to have sorted me.  (Wonder if it'll also fix that weird pop-up about real-time protection switching off)
