I was wondering what sort of snow cover I would likely find this week at anything up to the 300m level. There are some paths I need to look at and it's not worth the journey if I can't see/find them 🙂

There was a shed load of snow all over Galloway on Saturday, closed a lot of roads etc. Given that it's not warmed up since then I wouldn't be surprised if there was still a lot of snow cover...

currently snow covering all shaded ground - partial melt in fields etc.

where exactly do you want to look

Depending on where the paths are you may not even be able to get to them, still lots of small roads closed. I'd leave it for a while to be honest!

I was hoping to get to the area around Mochrum Fell but fearing the worst!

If you mean the Mochrum fell hill area nr to corsock then you've got absolutely no chance whatsoever, the snow will be here for another week at least due to the current cold temps and the possibility of more snow forecast for this weekend will only compound the issue.

Thanks folks. Looks like one for later in the year. I'll see if they have something else for me to survey.

mochrum is still cut off - 4ft drifts all over the back roads there.

as has been mentioned not worth the bother till the melt has happened

I'm doing some path surveying for Scotways. There are a couple of paths on the CROW database that need some revision. It normally involves me going back and forth over the reported line, looking for evidence of a track and usage and taking photos along with grid refs etc. and reporting on the condition and surface of the paths, bridges, fords, river crossing, fences, gates etc. Often there can be a newly developed line that will also need documenting. Although none of this information is currently on-line to the public some of my reports will make it on to the Heritage Paths website.

Here's one I prepared earlier 😉

That sounds like a cracking job, have you done many paths in this area?

Job? They don't actually pay me 🙂

My work to date has mainly been in the Cairngorm area.

which path in particular are you looking at?

is it the right of way from loch roan through to marnhoul? If so the path is still there, but one section is very overgrown and you need to know where to cut through the trees to join up with the northern side of mochrum.

Plenty of other paths in the area too.
