You can play email chess with people.

Generally these people tend to be evil, genius masterminds who are very good at chess, and very bad at being ignored. Honestly, I thought people on ebay were angry until I couldn't be arsed playing email chess with some people half way through the games. I even told them I couldn't be bothered and they were sending me death threats!

Although thinking about it, I wonder if it was just one person with lots of different email addresses....

Play the starter games eg trapping the king with pawns etc . Read a book to learn some gambits one that explains the strategy behind them not just the moves . Hoffer is good but out of date . Find a human opponent who is slightly better than you .

We used to play I school, sitting opposite each other at desks and kicking each other's ankles if we took too long thinking. That helped improve my playing 😉

There are general principles (worth knowing, even to know when to break them) - things like control the centre, castle early or not at all, look for pins and forks, stuff like that.

But really, yes, play lots of games.

When you get to the stage of strategy you need to read My System by Nimzovitch - essential reading and also very entertaining!

Something similar happened to me too... Also didn't matter what I tried they pre-empted it. I strongly suspect they were using a chess engine. But they were damn persistent and it stopped being fun.

Practice really is the only way, though be prepared to lose a lot of games!

Maybe we should start a STW online chess league?

cheers all.

i would be interested in the chess league but i really am a total beginner at chess 😳

am going to practice on the chess computer for a while so i can try to get the hang of the game/start learning about the different moves.

it's weird though as i have been interested in chess for a while, but just not got around to playing any games.

gave up playing chess over the internet, when you started to win your opponents would morph into computers.

I tried a free chess game on my phone a while back to play on the train to work; quickly gave up as usually I got done over before the train had left the platform.. that said my 10yo is interested so that might be more my level, for a month or so...

i'vwe played email chess through the international email chess club and never had a problem. apart from one game, against a mate who take ages to make his move. they do all the work and match you against people of your level.

Get beaten by a better player- while they are beating you you can study their moves and strategies. Also think first before you move and try to think 3-4 moves ahead. Have a plan B aswell.
