[#885356]

Got a 97 P11 TD with a fault crankshaft sensor (well i think it is - does not idle on cold startup or is very very rough)

According to youtube they don't look to hard to replace on big american vehicles. Unscrew and replace. But I have been quoted 1.5 hours from my local garage.

Any hints for identification/location and replacement on the P11?

Thanks

Crank sensors are usually easy to change, yes. It's getting to them that's often the tricky part, so 1.5 hours isn't that bad.

i would guess the sensor is located at the back of the engine on the passenger side, it's a few inchs above the sump on the engine block, removed with a 10 mm spanner but can be tricky to get at.
Also check your P11 sensor has been replaced, there was a recall on the P11 it should have a white mark sprayed on it, if it's the updated one it should have a white dot on it.

would also suggest you check the timing chain as at that age they can be stretched and cause issues running (not common for chains to stretch but those did causing miss fires)

Thanks all
Yea - the Nissan Primera 2 as its known (97-99). Has been stupidly reliable until this.

The petrol 'SR' engines had a recall for the crank position sensor but i don't think the diesel CD20 engines did.

Downloaded a image and it gives the sensor to be at the front of the engine passanger side. Thanks fozzy I think you are right on the money with it being at the back.

The oem nissan timing chain is about 10,000 miles old so I don't think it is that. All other belts and filters changed earlier this year. Even chnged out the 3w-30 full syn incase it was having an effect. Probably a bit overkill for a 88bhp engine. ha.

Yer, just had a google for the crank sensor and it was a nissan recall on the petrol, my mistake.

i'm sure it was at the back.. sure we had to get it on the ramp to get to it... been so long since we messed about with them.

sounds like it's all good then, a swap of the sensor and you should be all go (unlike more modern ECU's which take 25 miles to adjust etc) might be worth removing the battery to reset the ECU though as there may be some adjustment done by the ECU to combat the timing issues. not sure if they had smart calculations in those ECU's.

Ramp! Now I'm sh*tting myself. Can feel a lot of skin loss and hand cleaner coming my way. I assume Nissan don't see very many 12year old vehicles.

All the googling I've done indicates problems when hot but I'm getting problems only when cold. Will try a hairdryer on it for a few minutes tomorrow morning.

MAF could be your other issue.
