Largely because of work, recently tried an iPhone 4 but struggling with it. Like the look the Defy as it's relatively small, you don't have to worry about damaging it (the iPhone seems too nice and I worry about scratching etc as have a reasonably outdoors-y lifestyle).
Specifically, is it good as a phone, and picking up emails

got mine up and running with no problems, can 'do' e-mails with no issues, tough enough to just 'chuck in the Camelbak' doesn't get scratched and is well waterproof.
Haven't had any other 'smart' phones for comparison but geekworthy workmates reckon "it's a good'un"
hilldodger - thanks (like the idea of bunging it in the rucksack no worries). Is it good as a phone ie. making phone calls! (I found the iPhone pretty average on that)
Mine is currently getting fixed as the speaker broke and I couldn't hear anyone. A bit of a problem for a phone really...
Apart from that it is a pretty neat little thing, you can fit it in your pocket unlike an iphone and it does emails etc fine.
As for knocks, it seems quite sturdy and the screen is especially tough to scratch. I'd recommend it of you're worried about water getting in too.
Yes, it's as good as a good Android phone should be, and I've done the beer test. It survives. Good size for pocketing, good call quality. Simple setup. Default apps are good, but if you get geeky there are loads to keep you happy. Never going beyond Android2.2 though if that's a biggie for you.
Love mine - its simples yeh!
And cool when you drop it in your pint ๐
looks like the one ... anyone after a iPhone 4 ๐ณ
