got mp4 and avi films on my usb stick. my laptop used to have windows 7, and when i connected it to the tv via HDMI cable, i could watch what was on my monitor, so watched various films from it.

now ive installed linux mint to the laptop i cant get this feature to work. i do exactly the same connections, film is playing on lappy, but i just get the desktop on the tv!! even tho its not displayed on my laptop at the time cos the films playing.

ive googled a bit and played around, and it looks like its thinking ive 2 monitors, and i have actually 'moved' it over to what should now be my laptop, but it just says something about 'unsupported signal' and its just a blank tv screen.

again ive googled and get the impression that resolutions may be at fault but ive had a bit of a play and cant get it to work.

my wifes laptop will play it fine, as shes on windows 7 like i was. id like to get it sorted on mine tho for when i dont have access to her laptop.

can anyone shed any light on what the problem is?

thanks a lot

I'm not a linux expert but it could be that you are just running the default video drivers.
Try and download and install the latest video drivers for your video card from the manufacturers website.
