Hi
Can you have a look for me please and see how many hours are given for removing and refitting a Y60 Patrol gearbox?
Thanks
What engine has it got?
rd28t remove n install 3.5 hrs
tb42e remove n install 4.4 hrs
td42 remove n install 4.0 hrs
Add a little for fudging and maybe clutch inspection.
Ah, thanks. 4.2D straight six. From a Y60 (current model is Y61 - as you probably know).
He charged me 23 hours to:
Drain gearbox oil, replace with new. Report.
Remove gearbox, strip and inspect. Report.
Make list of parts required, fax to Nissan, receive prices. Report.
Source and fit new clutch.
Fit second hand flywheel supplied by me.
Install second hand gearbox supplied by me. Put new oil in.
Change engine oil and filters.
I think 23 hours is too long. What do you think please?
I think it doesn't sound like 3 days work.
Were you quoted a price in advance? Is the invoice anywhere near that?
It was agreed that he would charge by the hour - at £45 plus vat. It was also agreed that the deadline was by 27 March 2010. (Gave him the car on 1 March). He came recommended so I had no reason to suppose he would try to stripe me.
I believe he overbooked himself, and got behind with my car. Instead of telling me that, so I could have made other plans, he and his wife decided to string me along. Obviously I became more and more annoyed about it as the time passed and they were dragging their heels.
Ended up with a row on the phone with his wife on the Saturday morning (of the 27th - when the car was supposed to have been back with me) - the gearbox wasn't even back in it at that point. She threatened that if I continued to kick off she would shut up shop at 1pm that day and my car would stay there until Monday.
Finally picked it up at 7.30 that evening. I asked for the time to be itemised, but only the work is. I am asking the solicitors at work to write a letter, I want the hours broken down, but first I need to get a feel for whether he has overcharged me or not.
Can we bookmark this to remind everyone that its not only main dealers who can overcharge from time to time please 🙂
Christ on a bike, 23hrs!!
yep thats a mega rip off. good luck with it
Autodata gives 4.5 hrs to replace flywheel, as that involves box out n clutch off nothing extra there. Max of 1 hr for a gearbox oil change n report. Strip a gearbox? 4 hrs for a mechanic to inspect n report is generous.
So refill gearbox with oil n engine oil n filter change, Say 1 hr
4.5 + 1 + 4 + 1 = 10.5 hrs Add a couple more for stubborn bolts n general fudging n phoning around still leaves ten hours to be accounted for.
Good luck
I am not saying he is in the right, but I find Autodata wrong on a daily basis especially on Asian cars.
Experince has taught me that while autodata can be wrong it is usually a good guideline hence putting a couple of hrs on for problems n such.
