I was an androidophile but I have gradually realised that it is a scam to get me to show my underwear to the world (metaphorically speaking). Will a windows phone harvest all my private musings, contacts, locations and habits? Is there a smart phone with email/internet that is "clean" in a private way?

Microsoft claim it won't. But honestly I don't know.

Windows uses Bing as the default search engine, so provided you don't use Google you should be OK, Apple will not allow anyone access to any location or other personal data, unless they're served a court subpoena, although you'd need to set your default search to Bing instead of Google.
You can also use DuckDuckGo as well.
