MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
After having 2 days of hell with my inbuilt satnav (2017 focus) I've decided to be more proactive to the issue (stop using it instead of taking a hammer to it).
Can anyone recommend a good satnav app that works well with android auto? Currently using waze but wouldn't say no to purchasing an app if it's worth the dolla.
Google Maps.
Does everything and you can download if you are going to be somewhere offline
CoPilot (paid). Waze is decent though.
TomTom is available for Android, I believe, and having used it professionally for around eighteen months I’d say it’s the best. CoPilot, Here and Navmii are all good, but I haven’t used them since installing TomTom, I deleted them to free up some space.
Google maps is excellent, no need to look at further.
Google maps is good enough but I do prefer Copilot. There might be better out there though.
Google maps or Waze work perfectly well but... both can let you down if you are out of signal at the start of a journey as you can’t search for destinations without a data signal. If you’ve got the space for it ‘navmii’ comes with all the mapping data in the app (so its big) - I don’t use it in preference to waze or google but it comes in handy pretty often either out in the sticks or - for some reason- in Stoke on Trent. Google and waze both seem to fall over when ever I’m there.
Thanks everyone, I'll take a look at copilot and tomtom (think ford uses tomtom in their satnav but I'm sure the app is better than the crap ford installs).
Google maps would be perfect but it doesn't give speed limits, thats kind of a must for me.
Using "Here"... Works well and copes well offline. Free any country download. Accurate and smooth across countries.
Interestingly Google do have a speed limit database for the UK and you can you access it for your own application but they don't expose it in maps. Wonder if it's a liability thing or something like that.
Tom tom speed cameras work with google maps. Run them both together. But your right about normal speed limits though.
Here works for me and has speed limits.
My tomtom failed when driving through central London this week and I switched to waze and it was excellent. Has speed limits and has notifications when exceeding.
As its also a collaboration with other wazers you get warnings such as car in hard shoulder, potholes etc.
Google maps for the mapping and nav, with the Tom tom speed camera overlay - gives you (or certainly did last time i used it) real world speed limits as well as cameras.
Waze as above, I use it for work (40kmiles a year). It’s fairly good for predicting traffic. Works well, can be a bit battery hungry. Added bonus, a business name is often enough to get nav although voice control is a bit flakey through the Ford hands free.
Turns out only google maps and waze works with android auto. Frustrating but helps me decide to stick with waze.
Thanks for the help everyone
Waze is great as you get all kinds of alerts - car on hard shoulder, hidden police with radar guns, debris in the road. Usually very accurate too.
I've just seen the "Here.." has traffic updates now too so I'll have a gander at that.
Sygic was another one to look at. This, and Here has offline maps too so shouldn't be too iffy when you don't have a cellular signal. (Actually, Google Maps should have the option to save a map area too).
I’ve been a fan of waze for years, but the recent advertising features are making me think again; it can be too distracting.
After a bit of searching it looks like you can use waze offline

Haven't tried it yet but seems to work according to posts on the interweb
