So my sons 2.5 yr old huewa had gone really glitchy. I don’t know anything about android but is there updates or a reinstall I can do to save me having to replace a bit very old phone?

Yes, factory reset after you've done a back-up to his Google account. When you restart and sign into the same Google account, the previous Apps should all come back in.
May not have Google on it because trump. May be a way to get Google on it if not. Ironically, Google for the answer!
Sometimes a simple reboot will solve it enough to delete any offending apps. That's a good place to start too. Delete all the apps that either don't get used or are a drain on the system. Until the phone starts to respond normally. Then reinstall anything that is required. Facebook and related apps (Instagram etc) are a massive drain on the system.
