Can anyone recommend any decent(ish) hotels in amsterdam?
Not looking for a cheap doss house in the red light district!!. A central location would be good.
Just spent a few days at the Hotel Amrath, lovely place, great location (walking distance into the centre of town and to the main train station), and very reasonably priced ( for a 5 star). I would have no problem recommending it.
I usually stay here -
Nice place, a little away to the South of the centre, but everything is so easily accessible by bike there's no need to worry about that!
Now, even though you didn't ask, I shall also recommend the following;

Oh, and Macbike for a hire, from the guys just outside to the left as you exit Centraal. Batavus Single FTW!

I stayed at the Radisson Blu a couple of years back and it was perfectly good in a standard business hotel type way.
And definitely go to indewildeman (as CFH recommended to me back then) if you like beer - basic but lots of great beers to enjoy.
Not in the city per se but strongly recommend the Carleton Square in Haarlem, having stayed many times (and back again tomorrow).
Park hotel mentioned above is where i stayed with my girl friend. Nice hotel, can easily walk everywhere you need from there.
