When you watch somet on the tv, by using airplay to "beam" it onto apple tv, what's doing the downloading?
is it the phone/pad/mac that is downloading or the apple tv?
It's the phone/pad/mac. Pretty sure anyway.
Magic...
Yeah Airplay is the main device doing the work and then sending it to the other device.
if you got chromecast does it do the same? just curious. I'm watching the giro using my phone to appletv and it's ok but could be better.
Chromecasting is telling the device to retrieve it for itself. So a cast of something from YouTube tells the dongle "go get this from youtube and play it" and doesn't stream from the phone/tablet.
Its like a 69, stuff going on at both ends simultaneously without either end really in charge, ultimately not as satisfying as slipping a DvD in the slot.
IMHO of course.
Its your iPad/mac/iphone. All airplay is doing is streaming the content to your Apple TV / Airplay device via your WiFi network.
Obviously if you access something like NetFlix directly from your Apple TV, then the Apple TV is connecting to the internet and Netflix directly.
As @grum and @wobbliscott say when using AirPlay it's the device iPhone / iPad which is doing the downloading from the internet then sending it to the Apple TV. That being said the Apple TV can stream direct from the web for example when using the Vimeo, YouTube, RedBull or Netflix apps. As an aside I tend to click "watch later" on the Vimeo STW midweek movies from my computer or phone and then stream them direct on the AppleTV.
