These things should be banned.

Pointless chavvy crap generally popular pursuit on council estates.

Just my opinion though.

Exactly what the spoddy Constable on the front desk said when I went to the Police Station to pick up my first shotgun cert application.

Duty Sergeant puts his hand on the Constable's shoulder, and comes out with the line...

"bloody good job you don't make the law then isn't it"

Indeed.

If I were buying my first one again I'd go for a simple underlever .177 with a decent scope for around 250 -300.

Something like a BSA Polaris would be ideal.

Air rifles are surprisingly powerful and I'd be very cautious about back garden use unless you have no neighbours.

Not chavvy at all marksmanship is a perfectly reasonable thing to learn.

Pointless chavvy crap

Also incorrect *

- teaches good gun handling / discipline to youngsters
- very useful for vermin control in areas where shotgun would be inappropriate

* - although I don't deny they can be

As per the link above - you can spend as much as you like. Old BSA meteors and the like from £35 to a couple of £k for high end sporty jobs. It all depends what you want to do with it - popping away at some tin cans, a bit more serious target shooting or taking out some rats.
pre charged is expensive, accurate and powerful - had a shot of a weihrauch hw100 with specialist scope, awesome accuracy, but too easy to hit the target (where's the fun), but probably good for vermin. About a grand though, so steep. AirArms S410 is popular.
I got a Umarex Airmagnum for dealing with rats and crows that were infesting the garden. Reasonable price (£250 second hand with zoom tele IR scope), but uses CO2 bottles which can be expensive over time. 8 shot magazine and nice bolt action though
if it's just for messing about, a springer's good. Bit of a kick making the shooting a bit more challenging
.177 or .22 - depends - generally .177 for sport, .22 if you plan killing something.
If it's for fun, think about a pistol, eg Webley Alecto, then bling it up with red dot sight and laser targeting.

EDIT - and be familiar with the law. penalties for misbehaviour can be severe

Meanwhile, back to the OP...

Ask yourself what you want it for.

plinking cans on some (privately owned) rough ground - break barrel .22 springer is hard to beat...

uses CO2 bottles

Doesn't CO2 = FAC?

Not neccesarily. Most pistols are CO2 and legal at around 5ft/lb. The airmagnum takes 2 sparklets cylinders in an adapter or 1 88g cylinder. AFAIK the firing pressure is unregulated and you can fix up an add-on to pressurise the adapter from a fire extinguisher so you probably could over-pressure it, but using stock supplies - legit.

My HW100 is just below the FAC limit of 12ft/lb. It's a very simple job to convert it so it shoots at around 20ft/lbs but I've never had any problems with it in standard form.
When you start tinkering with them, there's a payoff in terms of how many rounds between charges and I'm told they lose accuracy if you go too powerful.
Awesome gun though. The Airarms mentioned above is a cracker too for a springer, heavy but nicely balanced.

The S410 isn't a springer, dude.

I picked up a new SMK XS78 with a scope for £100 from our local shop, which for a chinese copy is very good. Its a C02 rifle and it goes it will go through CO2 canisters at a fair rate if you get in to it. They are a bit rough around the edges, but will shoot very accurately for the money.

correctamundo - it's a multi-shot pcp.
the S400 is a single shot pcp which can be upgraded to multi-shot
(10 shots/mag?)

If you want a springer then the Airarms Pro Sport is the Rolls Royce of springers. Sold mine as it was far too heavy for my girly little arms (went down the .22 rimfire route instead).
Go and read up the options at AirgunBBS, but be warned they suffer fools and newbies even less gladly than STW 🙂

Yup, sure does, trying to put a tiny little lead pellet through the center of a small paper target tens of metres away consistently does take talent.
Not that you'd recognise any sort of talent, obviously.
Oddly enough, reports of air gun crime generally are fairly rare, and I can't remember the last time I heard about it on any of the housing association estates around my way. There's the occasional report about some asshole shooting swans, but that's a long way from being “Pointless chavvy crap generally popular pursuit on council estates.”
And what's with your damned username? Surely it's ‘willkillforchips’?

We've a few (BSA, Webley, Weihrauch and Gamo).

For just getting into it, £100 will get you a new decent enough rifle and scope, or nearer £300 will get a quality one s/h.

The laws now mean you have to go to a dealer, no delivery/online.

And as most, I'll recommend what I've got - Weihrauch. Quality, quality and quality.

And probably best to just go with a break-barrel/underlever first time, far less cost/hassle.

I've had good experience with BSA, got a Super Ten Mark 2 (carbine) PCP and it has been brilliant and consistent.

Hijack, but looking to sell it now that my shooting buddy (with land) has just moved away, if you are looking at the s/h market let me know....

Good luck with the search, the other thread has lots of info and as others have said work out what you want it to do, I also really liked the Rapid 7.

I assume by the fact that you mention FAC limits that you know its illegal to have possession of a airgun over 12ft/lb unless you have a firearms certificate?.

I have a couple of Day states (air ranger and mk4 target). Lovely looking guns, more accurate than the bloke behind them . As mentioned elsewhere they are a bit like bikes in that you can spend Mega money on them but they don't necessarily make you better, it just means you can't blame the tools when its not happening for you

If you just want to see if its for you then check out the Chinese SMK XS78 (177) or XS79 (22).

For under a £100 notes I was amazed as to the grouping possible for such a cheap gun.

Gas powered, so could be costly to run and the stock might need sanding down and polishing, but every bit as fun to use as my BSA.

Loads of upgrades and mods too

The only Air Rifle i currently own was bought for £120 on Airgunbbs classifieds, a rough as badgers arse HW77 in .177 I had it reblued refinished the walnut stock and had it tuned by steve pope. More consistant shot to shot than a mates ripley AR5 and its a joy to shoot. I did alright with it in the springer section at a few HFT shoots too. i went through most types daystate, air arms and theoben but the old Weihrauch is the only one i've kept.

Several years ago I had a Feinwerkbau that even in my relatively shaky hands could put 2 (and sometimes more) pellets through an only-slightly-larger-than-pellet-sized hole at 10 meters. Wish I hadn't sold it

I still use my Airarms TX200HC underlevar on a regular basis mainly for ratting.
Heavy, but nice to hold & so well balanced.
Always wanted a Daystate, one day

airguns ar great; strap a DX led torch to your scope and you can eat rabbit every day for a year 🙂 rabbit ragu is exceptional 🙂 put a swan slim-line-filter in a .22 and you can shoot your brother in the leg and it hurts more than paint-ball without breaking the skin it seems 🙁

And knitting, and sock darning. Will it ever end?
Hows the paper hunting coming along? bagged a piece of A3 yet? i hear thats the stuff of hunting legends, be careful with your spud guns you may not kill it with the first shot leaving it wounded; it might attack leaving you with a nasty papercut!!!

I started off with a BSA Meteor .22 when I was a little nipper. Learned just with open sights... It was the business! From there I went to a Webley Nemesis with a Simmons 3-9 x 40 scope, a Weirauch 95K with a Bushnell Sportview and finally to a Theoben Rapid 7 with a Simmons Airgunner 4-12. I didn't ever venture over 12 lbs despite having a FAC and shotguns.
I now live in the US and shoot a .223 centerfire Remington and am saving for a .300 Winchester Magnum . I will always look back at my air rifle days fondly 🙂

How much space do you need for a bit of plinking in the garden? Presumably a pistol needs less range than a rifle, what's the point where a rifle becomes feasible? I've got fields on two sides of the garden, so no danger of hitting anything behind a target.

20 yds to be useful. Just make sure you've got a pellet trap and back stop

You can get low-powered rifles, and tbh as long as if there are folk around you don't shoot - you'll be fine.

I built my son a range in one of our outbuildings. Its 10m and I got a couple of pellet traps, work really well. Plus have added lights now. We are lucky where we are, as behind us we've a burn in a deep gulley, has no access so pretty good for shooting - my neighbour has a 100m range for his rifles 🙂

Air Arms TX200hc .177 for me, I don't hunt, just plinking and HFT comps. Find a local club and go along for a chat, you'll get good advice and get to try some guns.

Nice piece of kit. You'll need to look recharging stuff, either a diving bottle or a stirrup pump. I use a stirrup pump, but it takes a bit of effort at 200 odd bar.

Just a word of warning about being tempted to "easily convert it to 20 ft/lb. If you do without the necessary certificate you commit an offence with a mandatory prison sentence.

On a lighter note, nice rifle flip.

My lad has a .22 cal BSA lightning XL tactical. It's a black plastic stocked carbine springer, with a thumbhole tactical stock. It has a built in moderator, and is so well made/balanced he could shoot it off the hand at age 12. Using RWS Superdomes I could group it in a 5p sized target at 20 metres.

Last time we went out he shot a dozen bunnies with it, all head shots up to 35-40 metres. It went over the chrono at 11.5ft/lb last time I had it checked.

I used to have a PCP /177 Daystate. Accurate, but heavy and expensive. Now I can't justify anything more than his BSA.
