Yes they are on their way, working on the same principal as air bags in cars and designed to go off when a fall is taking place.
No doubt of use in advancing years but surely some humour to be derived here ?

So if you're wearing tight jeans all of the expansion of the pants will be directed inwards and you'll end up with ruptured testicles *and* a sore arse?
or are these American pants?
