Lane nearest the central reservation would be the 'offside" lane. Lanes to your left are 'nearside' or 'inside'. I'm not a huge driver and barely know a bmw from a skoda but I'm pretty sure that's right.

inside lane is the one furthest to the left of any carriageway including a roundabout.

wev'e clarified three things.

What's the third?

I Am in the middle lane. Doing just over 70. I am overtaking slower vehicles such as Eddie Stobart

Sounds totally sensible to me, so long as your successive overtakes weren't a week apart. My post wasn't aimed at you so much as generalising.

Note: In British English the meanings of inside and outside lanes are the reverse of US English. So in Britain, overtaking is performed using the outside lane; in the US it is termed the inside lane. In both cases, it is a passing lane farther from the shoulder of the roadway.

Overtaking on the inside or undertaking

Are you pissed or taking glue?
We do not overtake on the inside lane in this country, forgive me if you are indeed an American.

If every driver is following THC then overtaking on the left wouldn't be (safely) possible.

That utopia aside, there is no law against passing on the left (beyond variations on 'driving without due care').

In the US (IIRC) you can pass on whichever side you like.

Now it all makes sense 😆

Inside lane!!!!!!!

No. That's the outside lane. Inside lane is on the left.

What??!?!

Best stick to "lane 1," 2, 3, etc. Otherwise we've got opportunity for confusion.

Also, there's no such thing as a fast / slow lane.

Inside lane being the one nearest the central reservation. No-one undertook me,

Your failure to understand inside vs outside has probably caused two of this three pages worth of responses.

aracer doth spake:

yes it is quiet possible for a nobber to undertake you if you're overtaking safely and sensibly in the middle lane and the nobber doesn't care about safe gaps. Or would you only ever pull out to overtake when there's less than a car length gap to the vehicle in front? Get back in your box.

Spot on.

For anyone interested in the maths, at 70mph a two-second gap is 62.59 metres.

So there is plenty of room for some idiot to undertake you if they don't care about safe gaps.

You move 'out' to overtake stuff. Unless you're undertaking, where you'll move 'in' and get a right bollocking on the Internet for telling poeple that you've done it....evidently.

I think you'll find any lane I'm in is the fast lane, whether that's be 1,3,4 or 2
Or indeed the hard shoulder. Only the other day on the M62 did I have to pass some slow people who may or may not have been hogging the middle lane, using the hard shoulder.
Just making progress gov.

I did write from experience having had somebody do exactly that. I was in the middle lane approaching a vehicle in the left lane at a point where it would no longer be safe to be in the left lane, when somebody coming fast from behind moved to the left lane and undertook me before pulling out. Except that they didn't actually pull into the gap in front, they clipped the front of my car - and I felt very fortunate to maintain control of the car.

Yikes.

I did once have a muppet decide that I had pulled out to overtake too early, so he "taught me a lesson" by going for an undertake.

Took all my willpower not to accelerate slightly and put him straight into the back of the truck I was overtaking.

He'd probably have just done the same as that driver did to me. In retrospect I should have backed off to give him space - I didn't accelerate, just maintained the speed I was doing.
