I've just bought the first album from Canadian electronica duo Purity Ring. I've listened to it three times now and I'm absolutely mesmerised by it.

Cutsie vocal (from Megan James) delivering quite surreal, obtuse often indiscenible lyrics layed amongst some charming, complex ethereal synth - at times punchy. Good bass patterns and some very effective vocoder type effects used. I reckon it would give an audiophile's sound system a good work out.

I would say it has elements of Cocteau Twins, Bjork, Vangelis and Ellie Goulding.

It works for me anyway.

It may be a bit early in the life of this thread... but I'm doing it anyway. 😉

Electronica? We're not uncultured yanks, I think you mean house or drum n' bass or DUBSTEP or at the very least dance music. I hate that term but I will check out the tuneage, ty.

Cocteau Twins, Bjork, Vangelis and Ellie Goulding

Do they do drum n' bass or dance music? Errr. Nope.

Bjork does 🙂 Or to split hairs, her producers do.

I like the term electronica. For me it means dance music that you listen to.

Agreed. The alternative - "intelligent dance music" - is just too pompous to use with a straight face.
Mind you, I've never seen how anyone could dance to most electronica.

The synthesizer is the dominant musical instrument - therefore electronica is a perfectly apt description - personally I’d like to break it down even further as ‘Witch-House or Detroit Electroclash’ 😀

I YouTube’d them and listened to Lofticries & Belispeak - not bad at all. Their videos are really good but overall not really my thing. I like threads that introduce newish sounds/bands, so good shout.

Well, I went to see Orbital on Friday night, which was amazing, they get better every time I see them
