(Park Cross of Iron, that a 70's masterpiece).
A Bridge too far is still fresh, the action isnt dated like some greats.
Thoughts?
I find myself flip-flopping on this all the time. My shortlist would include The Thin Red Line, Full Metal Jacket and Apocolypse Now. Maybe Platoon.
Thoughts?
Will there ever be a boy born who can swim faster then a shark?
The Cruel Sea
Heroes of telemark or Revenant.
Worst - thin red line.
Hannibal Brooks
I'm going to buck the trend and go more modern with Black Hawk Down.
Kelly's Heroes
Saving Private Ryan
FMJ
Apocalypse Now
Catch 22
What's "scary" is all the houses are still there looking fresh/quote modern in Arnhem today
saving private ryan.
Hard to beat Apocolypse Now for the sheer scope of its ambition!
Yup.
Well cast, pretty factual, well as factual as you can get from Hollywood pulling the strings, but Best War movie ever?
No not by a long chalk.
Saving Private Ryan was pretty bloody realistic with an emphasis on bloody.
Kellys Heroes for ironic fun Sutherland and Eastwood in their prime.
The Longest day because when you were there it was black and white allegedly.
Ice Cold in Alex, carlsberg never tasted as good
The Cruel Sea
All quiet on the western front
Cross of iron
Das Boot
Oh there are too many to go on mentioning them, no it wouldn't be on my list as number 1.
Noooooooo. I agree with Jambalya on something. The Cruel Sea, also a great read. Quite a blunt sort of film for its time.

'71 is pretty good aswell.
Downfall is brilliant
Where eagles dare for pure entertainment .carve her name with pride is a great film and a true story
P-Jay - MemberI'm going to buck the trend and go more modern with Black Hawk Down.

Kajaki
That's the UK release title of B2K as above. (Not sure why I used the US title!)
Yeah just realised that when googled Kilo two bravo, didn't realise had different titles
The Eagle Has Landed deserves a mention from that era.
I opened the thread thinking Kajaki and Heroes of Telemark. I see they have both been mentioned.
It just occurred to me that they are both based on actual events. Does knowing that make the film more engaging?
Bridge on the River Kwai
War = Madness
Even the men who recognise it as madness get dragged in.
Re Kajaki, Tom (The chap wot wrote it) also wrote Chalet Girl.
Just war films??
Inglorious Barstewards then.
Come and See (Idi I Smotri).
The most brutal depiction of war I've ever seen. Truly horrifying.
One of, certainly.
Thin Red Line
The Front Line (korean - brilliant)
Full Metal Jacket
Dr Strangelove (counts in my book)
Many great films here, old and new.
As an aside saw War Dogs recently and it was enjoyable but clearly nowhere near the standard of these. True story.

If get past the flag waving then American Sniper
After not seeing it since it came out, tried to watch Black Hawk Down recently and it was terrible. Thought it was ok first time round!
Apocalypse now, Platoon, Jarhead, The Deer Hunter
I'm breaking the rules here because I'm talking about the series, not the film, but for me it has to be...
M*A*S*H
For me probably Downfall as my one stand out choice. Lots of other good ones including the OP's suggestion.
Going really left field I also think The Railway Man is an interesting take on a war film.
I'm a simple fool..
Sink the Bismark
Battle for Britain
Tora Tora Tora
The Great Escape
Kellys Heroes
TheDambusters
Bridge on river Kwai
