(Park Cross of Iron, that a 70's masterpiece).

A Bridge too far is still fresh, the action isnt dated like some greats.

Thoughts?

I find myself flip-flopping on this all the time. My shortlist would include The Thin Red Line, Full Metal Jacket and Apocolypse Now. Maybe Platoon.

I'm going to buck the trend and go more modern with Black Hawk Down.

Hard to beat Apocolypse Now for the sheer scope of its ambition!

Well cast, pretty factual, well as factual as you can get from Hollywood pulling the strings, but Best War movie ever?

No not by a long chalk.

Saving Private Ryan was pretty bloody realistic with an emphasis on bloody.

Kellys Heroes for ironic fun Sutherland and Eastwood in their prime.

The Longest day because when you were there it was black and white allegedly.

Ice Cold in Alex, carlsberg never tasted as good

The Cruel Sea

All quiet on the western front

Cross of iron

Das Boot

Oh there are too many to go on mentioning them, no it wouldn't be on my list as number 1.

Noooooooo. I agree with Jambalya on something. The Cruel Sea, also a great read. Quite a blunt sort of film for its time.

The Eagle Has Landed deserves a mention from that era.

I opened the thread thinking Kajaki and Heroes of Telemark. I see they have both been mentioned.

It just occurred to me that they are both based on actual events. Does knowing that make the film more engaging?

Bridge on the River Kwai

War = Madness

Even the men who recognise it as madness get dragged in.

Come and See (Idi I Smotri).
The most brutal depiction of war I've ever seen. Truly horrifying.

Many great films here, old and new.

As an aside saw War Dogs recently and it was enjoyable but clearly nowhere near the standard of these. True story.

After not seeing it since it came out, tried to watch Black Hawk Down recently and it was terrible. Thought it was ok first time round!

I'm breaking the rules here because I'm talking about the series, not the film, but for me it has to be...

For me probably Downfall as my one stand out choice. Lots of other good ones including the OP's suggestion.

Going really left field I also think The Railway Man is an interesting take on a war film.
