Just stumbled on this article on the Beeb The Chop: Sky cancels TV carpentry show over contestant's tattoos and got me thinking that has society change so much that if there is possibility of offence then it's something that can't be shown?
Personally I think it's a bit drastic that they took this step and maybe a 2 minute interview with him about the meanings would help people understand why he has this and not jump to conclusions, get the pitch forks out and march on Sky.
88 also has a personal meaning for me as it was the first thing I spoke and has turned into my favourite number, does this mean my parents were racist or was it that we used to catch the number 88 bus everywhere?

If you have the number 88 tattooed on your face (alongside various other symbols), it absolutely means you’re a white supremacist or (far less likely) spectacularly naive. It’s embarrassing for Sky that they didn’t pick up on it immediately. Unless they intended to dog-whistle to the far right crowd.

Can't be that widely known as I saw a car with the number plate "X88 KIL" the other day, which I thought was making a bit of a statement.

Yes he could just explain how the 88 refers to the year of his fathers death. Obviously his father being alive makes him look a bit iffy but it’s an easy mistake to make when getting a commemorative facial tattoo - “dad dead / dad not dead - I’ll go with dead please”
Even if he didn't realise the significance is there a tattoo artist in the land who doesn't know what it signifies. I don't imagine many would do it regardless of any other meaning.

Shame for the other contestants/presenters /production... what a waste of time for all involved. Pity they couldn't have re-editted to remove him and disguised his face in background shots but maybe he ended up getting all through the show

Some good replies, shame if true about his dad that the BBC didn't mention expand on the father as this would have given the story a bit more depth or that Sky's background checks didn't pick this up as it would have been something that might have been watchable.

He did explain it with the reasonable explanation, which would get sympathy from anyone, that it was when his dad died.
However this has been ever so slightly undermined by the fact his dad is still alive.
So we have one whooper of a lie to start with and then there is the fact he seems to have been rather unfortunate in some of his other tattoos as well. Maybe those were when his pet hamsters died?

Tattoos like that are a rarity in this country, mainly because most UK tattooists will tell you to **** off. It wouldn't surprise me if the bloke had been in prison in the states, apparently those tattoos are very common in white prison gangs.

88, along with AH and SS, is not allowed on number plates here in Germany....well in Munich at least. Have seen cars from eastern Germany with dubious plates (along with the bumper sticker "this driver speaks German" in a Fraktur font).

I think most people are sophisticated enough to realize that, in most contexts, 88 is just a number with no sinister connotations, but when you tattoo it on your face, you're signaling that you're a Nazi.
