Will be going 28th Dec - 1 Jan

What are your must-do things?

Museums / Art omly if its a real must do - not that into staring at paintings the oik that I am.

City tours by bike or foot is much more my idea of exploring / getting to know somewhere. Places to eat, drink, see live music, take in the sights etc.

Stayed there along time ago; great place. Can't highlight pubs / cafes individually, just soak up the atmosphere. We stayed in a small ish hotel on the main Ring. Took walks to the Park (Ferris Wheel), out to the Belvedere to look at the Klimts (fantastic). tour round outside the big palaces; opera as well.

thoroughly recommended place and I'd be back like a shot if had the cash and time ๐Ÿ™‚

It'll be cold, very cold. The Jewish quarter has good eateries.

Livingstones is an excellent place to eat and has a very cool bar and is IIRC open 365 days a year. The ferris wheel is good, like the London Eye but in a ricketty garden shed and you can pretend you're Harry Lime.

Beautiful place...there's a church in the centre with catacombs beneath that you can take a tour around.

Bump for the morning crowd

kcal / avdave2 - we're staying next to that big wheel, suppose I'd best watch the 3rd man before we go!

Don't worry br - getting used to these cold places now - was in Riga for new years eve a few years ago and was sat at a outside cafe in -16deg.......this is our 10th year away for new year and the colder the better, makes it feel more like winter:)

The metro is very good for getting around. If you are staying near the wheel then Praterstern station should be fairly close. You can buy a weekly ticket for 15 Euros but when I was there a week or so ago it seemed to run from Monday to Sunday no matter when you bought it. It may have been a rogue machine as I don't recall that from previous trips. Livingstone's is at Zelinkagasse 4 and is indeed open 365 days a year till 4am. I would highly recommend it. If you fancy a curry Tandoor plus at Salzgreis 2 is good and the nearby pub opposite the Irish bar did a very good veggie burger - I can' t vouch for the regular fare though.

Just put this up on Tripadvisor but thought I revive this post to see if anyone else had any more ideas. It may look, loose and not to everyones tastes but just a general outline of things to do (e.g. yes we like to eat at nice restaurants but when on a city break we prefer to grab something for dinner and move on, not make a night of a meal - yes we do like art, well as much as the next person but dont want to spend an afternoon looking at paintings):

Me and my wife (me 35 her 31), LOVE live music (preferably indie), like chilled out bars (bohemian, studenty), like bike/walking tours, don't like art, like people watching, don't like commercial scenes, like simple food (burger joints, steak houses, Italian, schnitzel ๐Ÿ™‚ etc), don't like 'cuisine'

Day 1
Arrive at hotel on Praterstrasse late afternoon, check-in, get showered, head out towards Bermuda Triangle area (It looks close to the hotel, don't want to be travelling a great distance on the first night), something to eat, then find some bars, hopefully lots of nice places to dip in and out of.

Please recommend somewhere to get something to eat and some bars

Day 2
Morning - Red Bus City Tour (combined bus / walking tour)
Afternoon - Walking around Inner Stadt (lunch, drinks etc) back to hotel to get ready for the night
Nightime - Head to Gurtel area get something to eat, check out some bars such as Loop, Chelsea, B52

Please recommend somewhere to eat around this area

Day 3
Morning - Naschmarket area
Afternoon - Walk up through Statpark to Prater amusement fair, then back to hotel to get ready for night
Nightime - Head to Spittleberg for something to eat and check our some bars (maybe Wirr)

Please recommend somewhere to get something to eat and some bars

Day 4 (New Years Eve)
Morning/Early Afternoon - Museum Platz / walkimg around Spittelberg
Afternoon - Walking/Drinking around Inner Stadt
Nightime - Walking around Inner Stadt, watching Fireworks, drinking, celebrating New Year

Please recommend somewhere to eat near our hotel on Pratterstrasse

Day 5 - Go back to UK

Please can anyone offer their thoughts - thanks

as above, PratterPark is worth a good visit. I liked MariahilferStrasse for high street type browsing.
Charlie P's for the ubiquitous Irish Bar experience! (and good grub)

The christmas street fairs are well worth the visit alone, roasted chestnuts and super strong apple moon shine!

lovely city. don't try crossing the road before the green man flashes!
