New 11 speed cranks done no more then 15 miles and the finish is rubbing of already. Not impressed at all. Anybody else had this issue and any idea if I can do anything about it.

wot al said.

I moved the cleats in board a bit when I had the old 960's to prevent shoe rub 🙂

But after 15 miles should we really expect shoe rub so soon. The contour of the cranks won't allow a tape to be put on in any nice manner. But thanks for the advice

Rub something with mud and you expect what exactly?

that is just part and parcel of riding an MTB in winter. no different to any other crank. If you buy decent helicopter tape and warm it all up, it'll fit to all the curves nicely and stay put.

its annoying, but just part of being an MTB rider.

To be honest the new xtr are pretty much the ugliest cranks I have ever seen, covering them with rubs, scratches and mud is the best thing for them.

If I spent £300 on a crank made by Shimano I would expect the finish to be durable and not show up scuffs after 15 miles - was that the answer you were looking for shortcut?

TBH making them silver would have been a better idea but there are plenty of cranks around that only start to look worn after a few thousand miles

Poor show

The problem is they spend 90% of their R&D budget thinking up a new crankset design that looks completely different to last years one...

SRAM XX1 come factory fitted with tape, which is a nice touch, and you can use a DM ring

this doesn't help you of course,

The problem is Prissy little wussies!

Viz top tip - actually ride your bike and you won't ever see the outer faces of your crank arms. ride it quickly enough and no one else will either.

Except Shimano have shown they can do it better themselves, SLX's finish is far tougher without any apparent drawback. My old M970 XTRs all look haggard but it took years to happen not hours.

I'm not that precious about bikes but I think it's fair enough that folks might expect better. Why even bother painting it nice in the first place if looks aren't a selling point?

Aside the the cheap and simple option of putting heli tape on them, what finish could Shimano have used to prevent rubbing shoes particularly through the winter? When a rubber tyre will happily put a hole through a chainstay if the rear wheel is out of alignment, and a gear cable can 'saw' through a frame tube as the suspension moves, I'd certainly expect a shoe to do plenty of superficial damage to the finish of a crank

Am not that precious either but I do expect the finish to stand up to more than 15 miles use.

I'll take them off your hands if you're that bothered, for a knock down price of course due to the damage.

Its one of the parts on our bikes that suffers from heel rub (or whatever you want to call it) so it always amuses me when somebody pays for top end stuff and then seems surprised that it has rubbed!

Pick a part of your bike that is unlikely to suffer with the constant rubbing by either you or other components and spend your money there instead....nice bars for example.

I tend to view the drivetrain as something that will suffer with wear and tear, almost disposable if you like, Deore/SLX for me.

No good with 32, after 30 (one up version), so no cheaper by the time I buy a ring.

What a strange outbreak.

Rubbish your crankset openly and then try to sell said rubbish crankset for more than offered in this thread over there >>

Weird.

Srsly?

Rub them with a fine sandpaper for 15 minutes, expect them still to look perfect?

Should have covered them if you're bothered. Suck it up.

I feel like going round to the houses of half the people on this thread and throwing paintstripper on their bikes 😆

This thread (and the fs one) needs pictures. So we can see if they are ruined, as this thread points at, or they have 'a bit of rub' as the fs thread says

🙄

Oh my.

In which case you can "afford" not to cry over a little rub mark, or just buy another pair.

😆

I ve never said they were ruined just. That the quality of the finish was not what expected. It is just a little heel rub and may not annoy the masses of you lot on here but it annoys me.

My 7 year old silver xt set look ok still...

I don't see why xtr has any finish on it to be fair. If you go to the extent of using expensive titanium hardware to save a few g of weight, why not drop the finish too?
