I have a 2*10 XT setup, thinking about going 1*11 xtr. If I miss the extra top end am I right In thinking I can bolt up an extra ring on the xtr spider and use the existing front xt shifter and deralliour?

You may get away with the medium cage on a hardtail, but essentially, yes.

Chainline may be out, which can cause some issues with pie plate cassettes.

Replacing the single ring with a pair of double rings will correct the chainline. They use the same crank. You’ll need the double ring caps for the spider though.

Ah, ok. I can vaguely recall that on 10 speed cranks the chainline was adjusted between 3x ad 2x. So if you wanted 1x, a 3x was the best place to start. Obviously different on the current generation.
