[Closed] XT rear mech heavy up shift

Recently fitted a new 10sp XT shifter, cassette, rear mech and cable and I'm having issues with the upshift (small cog to bigger cog) particularly from the 11T up for maybe 4 or 5 shifts. The lever feel is really heavy and notchy.

I know the shadow plus can be a little harder to move but it's much more than you'd expect (I've had plenty on over the years). From mid-block upwards it's fine with a much lighter lever feel.

Down shifts are fine and snappy so the cable is okay, like I said it was new anyway.

Any similar experiences or ideally diagnoses would be helpful.

B screw too far out so mech is too close to cassette?

Issue with outer cable interfering with inner cable? Did you squash the outer when you cut it? Too tight a bend in your cable routing? Dodgy cable ferrule? (edit - should have read all your first post)

A couple of possibilities...

Cheers smatkins1,

The b-screw is wound in a fair way as the cassette has an extender fitted, which interestingly shifts up nicely. I replaced the outer cable because I crushed the first one in a cable clamp, I was very careful with the second one and it slides in the clamp if you pull it.

Should have mentioned I guess that it has a OneUp 16T in there too, plus the mech has the RAD cage modification. However the issue is from the 11T onwards so I can't think it's the 16T causing it.

Anyone had any experiences of the RAD cage resulting it heavy shifts from the bottom of the block?

Is it a clutch mech? You can adjust the tension.

Mine is pretty heavy through the whole range, definitely more so than you'd expect.
It's the clutch though, flick it off and it lightens up.

Going down the block is very light but it definitely thumps home so the extra tension is doing something. The RAD cage & body angle definitely have an effect on this.

Down shifts are fine and snappy so the cable is okay

When tension is applied by upshifting the cable inner can dig into grooves it's made in the outer. But downshifting will still feel OK. I bet a new cable (inner & outer) will be the cure.

My two are also stiff with the clutch turned on. Both were fine until I fitted expanders - in my case the extra B screw to avoid the bigger expander ring seems to make it stiffer. If I move it in so the cage catches the expander, shifting is nice and smooth.

Thanks for the input.

It is a clutch mech and I'm a bit reluctant to back that off, it's serving a purpose after all.

Also, the inner and outer cable are brand new, so I don't think it's the cable.

I'll have another look at the b screw tension to see if I can back it off further.

Check the outer cable route isn't too tight, I have same setup, xt clutched and RAD cage, it feels incredibly light on the upshift, although I was coming from a battered, alivio mech with knackered cable so my view could be skewed a little.
