I've just bought a new XT rear hub to replace a none to healthy Formula hub that came with my CX bike.
The Formula hub has an 8 speed cassette on it and I was under the impression that most 8 speed hubs will take an 8, 9 or 10 speed cassette. I've previously trial fitted a 10 speed cassette to the Formula hub and it fitted fine.
So why does my new XT hub say 8/9 speed compatible on the box? I've just done a little research and I see there are two part numbers for XT hubs - one for 8/9 speed and one for 10 speed.
Is the new hub I have not going to work with 10 speed when I eventually change to it?
the difference in widths from 9-10 is 1 mm so if one fits both fit - you may need a deeper 9 speed cassette retaining lock ring but probably not.
I assume the 8/9 or 10 just indicate age of model number
Just done some double checking - these are the two listed on the techdocs site:
Mine has the code FHM756A L on the box, so despite stating 9/8 speed compatible on the packaging, the tech doc appears to show support for 10 speeds. Good.
I've run the 8/9 spd version that hub with a 10spd cassette.
In fact, I've had it running 1,2,8, & 9spd. ๐
