For the money, is there anything that rivals an XT rear hub?

Mine has just fallen apart after minimal rides, so thinking a replacement may be in order rather than fixing it? (Yes I know that spokes may not fit etc, just want to know about hubs)

Cheers

Which XT hub do you have? 6-bolt or centrelock rotor attachment
(they're quite different and need different tools to maintain)

What has actually happened to it? You say fallen apart, are the nuts loose on the axle? In which case they can easily be tightened with the right tools

Other hubs?
6-bolt XT is a 2004 groupset. So 430g ish weight, 16point freehub pickup speed, threaded 10mm axle w.QR

centrelock XT will be 2012, 2008 (M770 etc?) or if you look really hard they're probably some 2004 (M760 etc?) ones kicking about somewhere
2004 I should think will be similar to the 6bolt one
2008 is about 100g lighter than 2004, 36point freehub, oversize 14?mm axle (reducing to 10mm QR)

2009 SLX centrelock I think is about 380g. 32point pickup, 10mm threaded axle w.QR (CRC has some M500 series (16point) SLX hubs listed, they're not SLX
Also a 32point SLX freehub will bodge onto a 2004 6bolt XT hub IME

Similarish money
On-one has a 10mm thru-bolt hub for £40 IIRC (no idea on pickup speed) for about 300g
Superstar Switch EVO about £60. 24point pickup, 300gish weight, will convert to many different rear axle standards (QR, 10mm thru bolt, 12mm maxle, syntace 142mm)

Must be a few other things for similar money

SLX has a more conventional axle system than the XT-M775, so should prove less troublesome, also has a splined disc mount and(I believe)similar flange measurements, so should swap with minimal cost and fuss.

The new xt hubs with the bigger axles appear to fall apart.

Go for lx or slx, they still have the conventional design.

I didn't know they did centrelock xt in 2004

Mr Toast had two XT rear hubs that died in two different ways, can't remember the exact details. I remember the one ended up like this though:

I think that was the one that died at Llandegla - a three hour drive, Mr Toast gets his bike off the back and after a couple of metres the rear wheel completely seized. I ended up riding Llandelga, he sat outside the cafe nomming a ranch burger and taking his wheel apart.

It made a far greater spider creature than it did hub to be honest. Those ones were from custom built wheels, I did also have a factory wheelset for a while that seemed a bit flexy, I put it down to them being 24 spoke and sold them on here. The new owner warranty claimed and got them swapped, apparently the insides didn't quite fit together.

If you're after a similar replacement for an XT hub my first suggestion would be a Ginsters Sausage Roll with a hole drilled in the middle.

Oh and centerlock is an awesome invention, centerlock wheels will be 50g lighter! Of course rotors will be 75g heavier but hey, you can't have everything.

I've found Circus Monkey hubs to work well. The slight negatives are firstly that the rear comes with next to no grease in the freewheel so make sure you add some. Secondly the design means that the cassette body and opposite spacer are only held in place by friction so if you take the wheel off the bike, be careful (eg keep the QR reasonably tight to keep it all together.

Its an Fh-M775 with the hollow aluminium axle - threads have stripped on this and SJS is the only place I can find a spare at £35!

As mentioned before, SLX M665 has a normal axle, and should swap with minimal fuss. £31.99 from Chainreaction.

I am at a loss as to how people can have hubs just "falling apart"
Lack of maintenance?

If you struggle to find a spare part for a shimano hub, but a whole new hub and have a complete set of every part in it then as a spare. They are so cheap it make sense.
