Building up my sons bike and realised I had threaded a crank arm, side the ring goes on:( I’m after a spare, this is the M8000 175mm - is there any cheaper alternative I could put on as I’m trying to build his bike on a budget?

Just fit an insert..(£2 each) (or get LBS to fit one for £15-£20)
but any 175mm 24mm HT2 Shimano crank will fit except 83mm downhill ones though these would fit if it was non drive side)

(way too many to list... but basically any XT/SLX for the last decade or Deore for the last 5 or so years...)

I didn’t realise you could get an insert,, do I need a special tool for it?

You need a tap for the insert outer thread and a drillbit the right size or reamer
(or you can get a combined reamer/tap)

There are different kits helicoil or solid inserts so what you need varies.
I use this insert/reamer (cheap for occasional use)
http://framebuilding.com/economy%20workshop%20and%20framebuilding.htm

scroll to items 229 and 230

or you can find someone with the reamer... I'm in Woking if that works you're welcome to borrow and replace the insert... or someone closer may well have one.
edits:
Its actually very easy but I also have some ends of cranks I cut off for my kid when making him custom length cranks (then tapping at a shorter length) so you could take one and practice before doing the real one.

I spoke to a LBS and they seemed to steer away from it due to the aggressive mid MTBin,, they said better to get a new crank arm 🙁 🙁 , I’m torn now - I really wana try the new thread idea as the crank arms are not that old,, but other than that il search eBay

Insert done properly will be fine.

Where are you based? I'm sure my mechanic friend in Carlisle offers this service.

Tarty bikes are £20 plus postage, normally a couple of people offering it on ebay for £20-£30.

Some shops will have the tools to do it, I charge £25.

If you are DIY and have a tap handle the Ceeway tools/inserts are cheap. The Unior/Var/Cyclus etc kits are expensive.
