Had my bike originally set up 2*10 with slx components. It all lasted over 1500 miles OK, and I only changed to all new parts as I changed to 1*10.
So 800 miles in, I change the chain (the only chain that has been on the cassette) (within stretch at +1/16" over 12 links).
New chain won't run without skipping. Old chain back on and running fine.
Can cassette really be past taking a new chain when original chain has minimal stretch?
Yes, it appears it can...
My 1x10 was the same, put new chain on at 0.5% using cheap park tool, put old chain back on.
Eventually changed the cassette and chain together.
cassette worn after 800 miles? feasible -- maybe different wear patterns on a 1 * 10 as opposed 2 * 10. Used differently as well..
Chains can be checked for wear but determining how 'worn' a cassette (or certain ratios of a cassette) is is a nightmare until you see the old & new side by side..
I buy two chains when I get a new cassette and swap them every two months.
Makes everything last a lot longer.
On closer inspection, seems that the wear has been between the rollers and 'bushes', rather than between the bushes and pins. So although the chain isn't stretched, the rollers are jingling about. Deore chain, will try something different next time.
Usually get KMC, Been fine for me and not too expensive.
YMMV of course!!
for the price of an XT Cassette and chain id just run them to the point of destruction, you should get 000's of miles
XT cassettes break before they wear!!
I'm running 1x9 with an XT cassette and kmc chains always used park chain wear checker and changed at 0.75 and onto its fifth chain never had any skipping even under power and still shifts well.
Dirtyrider +1 FWIW
I guess beach sand is a poor lubricant for the rollers....
Run them both into the ground, where were the 800 miles, how did they compare to the 1500 miles, were any of them in boggy winter conditions, griding paste puddles? There are so many variables on a mountain bike distance is only a small part.
Yeah they'll just get run into the ground now. Was hoping to change the chain to help preserve the NW and 42toother a bit, too late now tho.
Both set-ups at different mileages had similar use, although must admit I didn't try a new chain on the 1500mile slx cassette, so maybe it was screwed too...
shortcut - MemberXT cassettes break before they wear!!
How do you break a cassette? I've never broken a cassette in my life.
Interesting, Im guessing the rivets failed?
Interesting, Im guessing the rivets failed?
Yep!
The cassette on the photo was replaced under warranty. The new one did exactly the same thing after about 600 km (if not less)!
It's just a proof that Deore is the best groupset ever made! 8)
is it a dynasys cassette? Mine doesn't like any chain but a dynasys compatible one and the chain must be fitted with the inscribed side of the chain facing inward or it runs really rough.
