Right, bit of a first world problem this one but it is Sunday night and there's nowt on telly!

My older style XT brakes are great, mega powerful and were cheep but the lever feel is mismatched. The back brake has modulation and will pull halfway to the bar before the bite really kicks in then nearly to the bar before it totally locks up. The front is totally different, maybe 5mm of movement before bit then totally locks. I've never bled them and wouldn't really know where to start but with my old formula i've let a litle bit of fluid out making sure I nip the bleed nipple up before letting go of the lever. Will this work with the XT's too? or do they need to go to LBS for a proper bleed?

Edit i've tried the free stroke screw and low and behold . . . it makes no difference

cheers

Front sounds about right, suspect you have sticking pistons, or air in the rear one. Bleeding's a diy job for the reasonably competent, take it to a shop if you aren't one of them.

They might not need bleeding.

They will feel like that if the pistons are not aligned/balanced i.e. one piston sticking out more than the other.

To balance pistons push the rotor against the one that is sticking out / protruding the most whilst at the same time pulling the lever, repeat as necessary until pistons are balanced.
