XC/Light Trail wheelset

Looking to get a good condition, used, wheelset, will live mostly on my Ti HT I'm building up, but potentially also as a lighter, second wheelset for non-gnarly local rides or big day XC rides on the FS.

Ideally, want to get in at 1500-1600g (29er), so a reliable light alloy, or potentially carbon, wheelset. Budget is £400 tops.

Any suggestions for wheelsets that I can search for that would fit the bill?

(And, this isn't intended to be a stealth 'wanted' Ad ... but if anyone on here has something suitable, I'd be interested.)

The Silt Xc  - used by quite a few here now - are on offer at £296 and IME don’t crack….   https://siltmtb.com/products/cross-country-xc-29

Much like Hunt they're a 'catalogue' wheelset built from generic parts with a sticker slapped on them but for under £300 that's a fair price for what you're getting.

Thanks. Had considered the Hunts (have mostly good experience of them already, but have found the rims a bit soft) ... but yeah, catalogue wheels built down to a good price ... am hoping for something a bit better.

What should I be looking at DT Swiss wise ... am following a set of XR1501's on Ebay and have messaged the seller several times but not getting a response.

Anything else that might have sold for £500-£700 new, that might now come in at £300-400 used?

Personally speaking I wouldn’t buy 2nd wheels, who know what level of abuse they may have had, with no warranty?

YMMV of course.

Mavic of some sort.

I was always a little wary of Mavics 'prebuilt' wheels on the basis of them having odd standards, odd hub sizes and spoke types etc. I dont think they've ever been as popular in the UK as they are elsewhere in Europe.

However I've now had two pairs of Mavic XA trail wheels in the past few years and been really impressed - they are serviceable, lightweight for the spec, really good looking and were very keenly priced (often significantly reduced over RRP).

I think you just have to really do your research and understand what your buying - they change the specs, the designs, the freehub and rim designs almost yearly, the naming conventions are a little hard to follow and keep up with.

Something under the CrosMax banner will be right for you, but that covers a multitude of wheels - just do your research and check the product codes carefully. The cheaper wheels use a pawl system, the nicer/newer ones have Instadrive 360 Freehubs (Like a DT Swiss style Ratchet), really nice in my experience.

3 year warranty too.

HUNT Race XC MTB 29 Wheelset – Hunt Bike Wheels

I've been using these on my hardtail. Have proven to be as reliable as they are light.

Got a very nice (new) Stans Crest Mk4 built with Novatec's own-brand D772 hub, sapim spokes, brass nipples, etc by Mark at Spokesman Wheels for only £249 and that was a rear wheel so I imagine a pair could well fit your budget. Light and quite a quiet hub.

p.s. go direct rather than via the ebay shop for a better price

As you may have been looking for stealth fs adverts…  I’ve got a pretty mint pair of DT XR391 on black boost 6 bolt Hope Pro4 with Sapim D-Light spokes.  Were my spare pair of race wheels and have seen very little action.  If any use PM me.

I don't think fitwheels.eu will come in under that price but worth a look. Mine have been great. Heavier build for general xc.

Possibly then XC/Light are not the wheels for you, I've Hunt TrailWide's on my FS, 1800g and happily survived the likes of the Golfie.

Possibly not. I've got the Trail Wides on my steel FS bike, dinged the rim on the second ride out. And after 18 months, there were a couple of small cracks coming from the spoke holes (Hunt customer support was excellent, replaced the wheel without quibble the next day). And I've got the V1 4 Seasons on the gravel bike, several dings over both wheels. I'm not especially heavy (75kg ish kitted up), or a hard / clumsy rider. Possibly, tyre pressures have been a touch low at points. But I've also put plenty of mileage and (and arguably harder riding) on DT Swiss rims without bother, and no dents even on the odd occasion I've felt the tyre bottom out on the rim.

So, yeah, a bit wary of another set of Hunts I think...

I run DT X1900 on both my rigid 29ers. Good, solid factory set, which are sometimes in the sales for not much more than 400.

Hubs are good, plenty of spares/freehubs, easy to work on. No snags. Not super wide internally but fine for the tyres and riding I use them for.
