Can standard x9 shifters be used with 8 speed cassette?

The answer is still "no" 😛
The cassette spacing and shifter/mech travel are different; 8s and 9s cassettes are the same width but 9s has closer spacing and a narrower chain.

I did ask yesterday but still a bit confused because on merlin cycles website it says x9 shifters 8 or 9 speed?

No.
you'll either need a 8 speed shifter, or a 9 speed cassette. No way around if, but you're welcome to try it for yourself.
