I'm so close to buying a Dune... I've always wanted to try a fat bike and the value seems pretty good.

I need to stop looking at this thread!

One in the classifieds looks good value for money if you live anywhere near Derbyshire so you can do a cash deal after viewing.

so, now i need to chose a new colour for my dune! I am going with Solent Powder Finishers ( http://www.solentpowderfinishers.co.uk/bikes-home/bike-frames/) - it's £55 +vat to strip it, shot blast it, prep it, and powder coat the forks and frame. All i have to do is take the bits off first. The colour options are the RAL colours here: http://www.solentpowderfinishers.co.uk/ral-colours/

i'm thinking some sort of green, to go with the rim strips, but it will make it look like an army off-road vehicle, so i am open to orange or red suggestions too.

Help me Single Track!

Im a freak for orange - my front door is RAL2000 and its a great shade. Green rim strips would compliment nicely too. Orange is where my vote would go.

Be very careful to ensure that they mask your contact areas and threads diligently on your frame, ive seen horror stories of folk attempting to remove wayward powder coating after their frames recieved a liberal dose of the stuff.

Cheers Jim. You know what, I might just go with that ral 2000 - looks great. They say this "We then mask it, making sure the bottom bracket housing, seat post area and brake system stubs are clear of paint." So I'm not worried.....

I'll post a pic of my front door 🙂

Make sure they consider bottle cage bosses, rear mech thread etc. I think they normally stick a bung into these to prevent paint ingress.

Also a good time to smooth out that useless mounting point on the seat stay arch? And possibly fill in that weird chunk thats missing on the BB shell?..

Build your own Fatty SRAM NX1 for £599, or cannibalise the better bits for your other fatbike?
http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/CBUBOOFATNX1/on-one-fatty-sram-nx1-fat-bike-(special-build)

Which means at least some front wheel El Guapo hubs being made into wheelsets are RDS like the RDS carbon fatty fork, not that I've ever found anything on the site to suggest this (and one reason why I never bought a full set and why I am currently waiting for one of those £56 rear 170mm q/r wheel only deals (someone else has pulled the trigger since, so 4 left).

Could be a cheap way to convert a Wazoo to 1x11 plus add a carbon fork and lighter wheels, if you don't keep both bikes.

Frankenstein the Fatty frame with bits taken off the Wazoo, or replace drivetrain with a singlespeed kit, to either keep as n+1 or sell on.

This is my On-One Fatty trail which i had powder coated semi-gloss black by the good people at AS powder coating in Acton Suffolk. No powder coat in the threads and I was very pleased with it for £50 (frame only)
Oh and yes this does answer the question about putting a rigid fork on a Fatty trail it rides brilliantly!

Nice one fatty500! Did you put the stickers on yourself afterwards?

I think I am going to go with the RAL2000 suggested above, although my wife thinks green is the way ahead, as shown below:

that's not a 1k fatbike unfortunately! (it's a bespoke German 3K fatbike - bloody lovely though. If i win the lottery, i have that I think.)

THat green is nice. The orange is good too though, I reckon it could do with more contrast in the detailing.

If I was getting a fatbike recoloured, I'd be thinking about wheel matching too. Either paint/coat the rims, or make sure whatever colour I chose has a good option for matching rim tape. My yellow tape doesn't quite match the Dune's yellow (well, actually the colourmatch is pretty good, it's more the brightness)

I also love the Ritchey Commando fat frame + colour (great discounts at CTBM currently)

http://www.charliethebikemonger.com/ritchey-commando-fat-bike-frameset-6028-p.asp

Either way, green works well with orange, and vice versa. Just decide which fills your heart with joy more than the other. (orange, obviously).

How do you find the floater tyres ?

I haven't found the limits of the floaters yet but I have ridden them in mud, floods and on the beach and found them very capable. I think if i lived in a more rugged area of the country they might struggle. When I built up my fatty they were only £20 which was a strong deciding factor! They are a sod to seat when you first put them on but i lubed up the beads with fairy liquid and left them overnight with 25 psi in them and they've been fine since.

Tried to go tubeless on a new floater myself last night and even 100psi from my compressor wouldn't seat the bugger.
Going to install a tube for 24hrs and see if that helps it seat on next attempt.

Floaters on mine with Backer Rods, no real problems using a compressor with valve cores removed and plenty of Fairy liquid. Can't compare to anything else as its my first fatty.
They are a little unnerving on sloppy patches at speed but I suspect that's just a fatty thing?

After lots of short local trips with the dog I ventured out on the local Monday night ride and unsurprisingly it handled everything beautifully. And one local yoof called it 'well peng' whatever the hell that means!

Please form an orderly queue to tell me I messed up with my order...

It included a pair of 24" fat wheel tubes, as preparation to finally try ghetto tubeless on my fat wheels with the snakeskin Jumbo Jims, thought it was worth a punt for four squids.
http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/TUOOBF24/on-one-baby-fat-bike-24-inner-tube

Other bits of the order included...

http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/CROOSS/on-one-stainless-chainring

http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/AVRB/avid-steel-t25-rotor-bolt-pack

Not a bad little bundle for just over £100, with a £42 Hydrosphere waterproof jacket and a bundle of 50p CR2032 batteries. 😆

Nearly pulled the trigger on a white Selcof carbon post and WTB Sl8 pro saddle for £52, but if memory serves me right, £26 each is not the cheapest they have been this year.

Was tempted by a few other 29er tyres (Nano, Chunky Monkey, Smagasbord all £15 each), but I'm wary of ending up with a silly size collection of tyres! The fat tyres (Vee Missions £15; Mammoth £40; Floater £42; brown/pink Floaters £15? which now have disappeared off the site completely) didn't tempt me in the slightest, mainly due to their weight and/or performance issues, but some on their price.

Airshot is £42, not a bad price, forgot all about it when I put my order in.

Very very scary....

How so?
I mean, I wince every single time I turn my compressor on because im convinced its going to explode and kill me into pieces (never google 'air compressor accident'), but, its rated up to 120psi..

When trying to seat a tyre onto the rim isn't it standard to go for highest possible air flow available (for as long as possible, until seated)?

Currently 15% off a Dune with the DEC80 code, for the next week I think. Sadly they won't combine it with my 10% company discount...

Got my front tyre seated last night after 24hrs of using a tube to stretch the tyre into shape.
At around 20-25psi the bead snapped into place.

I stuck 6oz of stans fluid in and could only detect two or three areas with tiny amounts of air being lost, but no matter how much sloshing I wasn't convinced that I had completely eliminated the leaks.
Tested the tyre this morning and it's lost about half its pressure over night.
Any tips on sealing these Dune rims up good and proper?

Mine were like that for about a week,my mate advised me to just keep pumping them up to pressure and keep riding it and it will eventually seal,i took his advice and it's been perfect for the last 6 weeks or so.

sounds reasonable, will give it a go.

Also just ordered 32oz of (extortionately priced) Orange Sealant. Supposedly better at sub zero temps - so will suit my Polar expeditions on the SDW nicely 🙂

Hope it mixes ok with Stans..

I don't know what the max pressure for your tyres is, but, it's not 100psi. Jumbo Jims are 30 I think. And tyres coming off rims is pretty violent, I thought I'd broken my hand last time it happened (the wheel ended up flying across the room)...

When trying to seat a tyre onto the rim isn't it standard to go for highest possible air flow available (for as long as possible, until seated)?

I had electric tape over the whole bed of the rim, worked well. But ime it's pretty common for tubeless tyres to go down until you've given them a proper ride. A short thrash helps but it takes time to really settle them and spread the sealant around.

Im possibly getting tangle-tied with my readings..

The 100psi I probably mistakenly referred to was me cranking my compressor up to max output in order to give maximum puff (for longest possible time) for blowing an unseated tyre onto the rim - at the point it suddenly seals (prior to hearing the tyre bead pop into place) one backs off the air pressure and fills tyre to recommended PSI.

Works most of the time, all the time.

Ah fair dos, yeah, that makes sense- lots of airflow rather than lots of pressure.

HA! Yeah, get on the 15% discount and start enjoying your Fat bike THIS winter

NW - you drilled your seatube for internal dropper did you not?
What have you usd to plug the hole?

Im preparing to drill mine but the frame grommets I bought were for Di-2 and alas the ID is way too narrow for a standard gear outer cable to pass through.
I'm trying to source an angled grommet instead of using a plain old rubber donut as i'm aiming to have the cable run 'upwards' towards the seatpost as it enters the frame. Y'ken?

CRC has a couple of 'clip-in' options but they require a fairly elongated hole to be cut into the frame, which id rather avoid.

I'd hazard a guess at 100mm, but as someone that generally uses longer than specified forks on his bike, I reckon 120 would be fine. You can always run a bit more sag too...
